Kurt Warner on Focus on the Family’s “Daily Broadcast”. With James Dobson.
It’s funny I opened this up to find out who Tim Tebow was. But somehow I knew it was going to be another pitting of someone for holding mainstream right-wing views.
A leeeetle more right, than mainstream. He’s pretty evangelical.
I think at this point we only know he’s a devout Christian that has the unfortunate practice of putting Bible versus under his eyes and does missionary work in poor countries during the off season. I have no idea how he feels about immigration, taxation, corporate bail outs, etc. According to the link his mother was encouraged to have an abortion while he was in utero, but declined.
Someone asked him to do a spot about this. He’s still basically a kid, so may not be aware of other Focus on the Family memes, such as the whole anti-gay thing. At least I hope so. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in the short term and he certainly has the right to put out an “abortion is bad” message. When he starts lining up with Phelps and company, or otherwise shows he’s an intolerant douche bag, then I’ll be the first to throw shots his way.
I didn’t know believing that homosexuals “want to destroy marriage” was a mainstream view. I thought it was a little out of the majority even for conservatives.
Abortion, I’ll give you, but most of what I’ve heard about Focus on the Family was the anti-gay stuff (and the whole comparing the U.S. to Nazi Germany thing during the election). (Source: Wikipedia article on the org.)
ETA: Or are you referring to JUST the things Tebow talked about in the OP? Even with that, I think the Pitting is more about his membership in the organization, and what that seems to say about his beliefs, than what he’s directly expressed so far.
Just read a blurb on USA Today about this. Per the article, Dobson has “retired” from Focus on the Family and started a competing organization. Don’t know how, if at all, that might change their message.
Here’s another QB who has gone over to the Dark Side: Doug Flutie was spotted at a recent Tea Party with Mass. Senate candidate Scott Brown.
Thanks for solving for me the mystery of what the text in their eyeblack was all about. The last time I went to the bar I sat directly under their huge screen and accidentally saw some football. I tried to google it later but lacked the term “eyeblack”.
My distant perception of team sports is vague, but it seems to me that writing philosophical messages on one’s self divides a team that otherwise is centered around a geographical consideration (maybe I’ve misunderstood this point, I’m ignorant of Big Sports). Now the team is broken into subsets. Is this what sports fans want? Is this what team owners want? I don’t know.
If intentional pun: HAHAHAHAHAH!
If not intentional: Hey, did anyone notice the pun? Huh? Didja? Huh? It’s FUNNY!
Ivn, come 'ere. We need to talk.
Listen, buddy, the Pit’s not big enough for both of us to go running around, mocking the other posters for padding their own egos with threads about SDMB classic topics like conservatism and religion. We’ve got to get a little distance between out schticks. Tell you what, I’ll take the threads that start with letters A-M, you take N-Z, ok?
Dunno. I think a tag team approach might make for a more thrilling match.
If you really believe this is true of everyone who is anti-abortion (or even anti-gay marriage), then you are truly an idiot. And you win the Godwin award to boot.
Let me guess, you’re another one of those people who’s just so concerned about LIIIIIFE as long as it’s in fetal form, but have all sorts of reasons why Iraqi, Mexican, and homosexual lives don’t count, and oppose the sex education and contraception that would actually reduce the abortion rate? Pardon me if I don’t buy into your bullshit about the motives of Christian supremacists.
Let me guess: you were dropped on your head as a child. Repeatedly.
Guess again.
Ooh oh, let me guess: You people like to guess a lot!

Sunshine And Lollipops, indeed…
Who would have thought that a homeschooled son of Christian missionaries would grow up to have socially conservative views?
Yeah, what a shocker, right?
Anyway, I just on principle despise overt displays of religious behavior, particularly in the corrupted, evil, gambling and drug-infested world of sports that I enjoy so much, chief amongst them being football.
Anyone that draws any overt attention to themselves over their religious beliefs to me is generally viewed with a jaundiced and askance eye towards behavior that is diametrically opposed to their espoused beliefs amongst so many self-proclaimers and grandstanders.
I happen to hold ill-defined Christian-based religious beliefs, but I’ll always agree with Bill Maher on the sports action: “God doesn’t care who wins the game!”.
Seriously.
God is a Buccaneers fan.
Well, he was, until his disciple left the Bucs for Peyton Manning and the Colts. Word is that now God doesn’t follow football at all anymore. At least that’s what the cherubim are saying.
