Fuckin' LiveJournal

Fuck I’m mad. I just typed up a huge post in LJ about stuff that’s really been bothering me lately. It’s the first time in weeks I’ve had time to sit down and really think through what’s been giving me the shits, and type it all in … and LJ ate it! “The database is in read-only mode for maintenance. Please try again in several minutes”. What the fucking fuck!

Fuck that gives me the all-time fucking shits! FUCK FUCK FUCK!

And just because this is the pit: FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

It’s been doing that to me a lot lately, and it’s pissing me off.

You too? Glad I’m not the only one. It seems half the time I can’t log in because of that.

It may have something to do with which server hosts your particular account, but that’s just a wild guess.

Is that possible?

And therein lies the beauty of an old-fashioned diary. They’re never locked down for maintenance. And if you lose the key, entry is an easy as a bobby pin.

You guys on the filetmignon server? They’ve been doing maintenence on there and warned free journals would have that problem.

Sounds like you need to start doing what i used to do on the Dope—before hitting “Submit,” i would copy the text of my post and paste it into Notebook or some other text editor. That way, if i got the dreaded white screen of death, i didn’t lose all my typing.

Of course, now that i’ve switched to Firefox, this is no longer necessary.

Funnily enough, I normally do that. But not this time. Fuckit.

Flutterby, how do I find out what server my journal is on?

As to the other poster who felt the need to somewhat smugly point out the beauty of an old-fashioned diary, I have three words for you: cut and paste. The whole point of my writing stuff down is to get my thoughts organised into some semblance of order. Writing stuff down on paper just doesn’t let me do that.

Gah, maybe I’ll just go back to keeping my diary using Word.

Max.

One of their server-cluster-thingies is messing up.

My husband is having this issue, too. He can still post sporadically, though, so keep at it…

If LiveJournal or other submission web pages eat your entries, you can often use the Back button in the browser to go back to text you just typed up.

I’ve encountered the same problem you have with LJ a couple times recently, and this has saved me.

That’s happened to me before and it drives me absolutely bat shit crazy when I’ve spent an hour typing my thoughts out. When I lose those thoughts, new angry ones pop up and I forget what I was thinking about before that.

Still, I hold no grudges against LJ.

It’s done that to me too. I find that LJ commonky does this “maintenance” bullshit around 10 PM, EST. The back button doesn’t work with me for some reason…the update page won’t even access because it’s in “read-only mode.” I make sure to copy and paste my post to Notepad before I attempt to submit it now. Nevertheless it IS really fuckin’ annoying.

Log in, then go to http://www.livejournal.com/misc/whereami.bml.

This is why I always compose posts in my favourite text editor, then paste them into the update box when I’m done. I do the same for really long emails.

Both my accounts are paid, and I haven’t had any problems. I think I’m on tbone (?) and filetmignon.

Good plan. Because you know, Word never crashes. :dubious:

Simple solution: Use the Semagic LJ client. It doesn’t erase your text until after it’s posted.

I also reccomend semagic. Plus it lets you autograb your music from your media player.

Well, over here in the madcow cluster, we’re back in business. Hope it propgates across the system quickly.

Crisis averted.

Yeh, I’ve used semagic before, and I think I might go back to it. Thanks to everyone who’s offered their commiserations
Max.

I’ve been having the same problem all day. As far as I know I’m not on filetmignon, and I have a paid account. I may not cut and paste into a separate text editor, but I do copy it before I hit submit so I can re-paste it quickly if there’s a problem.

Oddly I haven’t had that problem here on the Dope for a very long time.
