I’ve read about half his novels, but I don’t own a single one of them! It’s been a quirk of mine to only read the ones I find as used paperbacks, and to recycle them back to the stores or free shelves where I found them. It would just feel wrong to have a whole shelf of Elmore just sitting there in my house.
I’m not sure the people I’m about to talk about are anti-maskers, but they are clearly anti-vaxxers, and I need to vent a bit.
There’s my former youth pastor who pastors another church. He says he never says political things on Facebook, yet these have been the only posts that he’s made that come to my Wall since Biden became president. He’s freaking out that Biden told people that they need to be vaccinated. He misunderstood several facts, so I try to correct them.
I did my usual explanation of why people do need to be vaxxed. Him being a Christian, I also include some Scripture to back me up, about putting others first. And his wife came back at me alleging I’d been “brainwashed by CNN” and said it was “scary.”
Their replies are full of people saying they won’t get vaxxed. They are give that laughing emoji as a reply to anyone who thinks otherwise.
It’s just so disheartening seeing people you used to respect ignore the very principles they taught you. As is the silence from others.
The projection is just so strong on these people. Yet I have to tiptoe around to not try and alienate them, as the goal is to get them to listen and get vaccinated.
You cannot defeat their echo chamber. Now can you defeat the combined might of Putin, Xi, OANN, QAnon, Faux, Breitbart, Mr. MyPillow, etc.
You’re spitting into a hurricane.
Tell these people in clear terms that they have lost their minds, are unfit to be called Americans, and you’ll graciously accept their groveling apology when they come to their senses. But you won’t be waiting for it.
Isolation is the only hope we have for the folks addicted to RW nonsense.
Well I guess my question didn’t age well, did it? Apparently that time is yesterday. CDC finally said what all rational people already knew (like usual). Vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks. My company decided to lift their mask mandate and I’m sure other companies will follow suit soon.
"
Choosing Safer Activities
If you are fully vaccinated, you can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic.
Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.
"
and so on.
That seems like a bad idea. It seems to be shooting myself in the foot. It has no long term upsides.
First off, even if the chances of convincing them are small, they’re not zero. The only way to guarantee failure is to not even try. Second, just because I can’t convince them doesn’t mean I might not convince someone else.
But the big thing is that Facebook is public, under my own name. Everything I say there has social consequences. I can’t be seen as that sort of colossal dick. I can’t myself be seen to undermine those morals principles I’m talking about.
The reason I feel okay with doing so here in the Pit is that this is a forum specifically for venting. It’s understood that we’re blowing off steam. We’re expected to sometimes come in here and say mean things to someone, and then go back and talk to them like nothing happened. The social expectations are different.
Maybe the expectations are also different where you live. But I live in the Bible Belt, where we’re all supposed to be at least superficially nice. And part of the moral principles I am talking about are the ones where we’re supposed to love everyone.
Other people may choose to become extremely hateful while pretending to still be a Christian, but I do my best not to. One of the reasons that Trump’s support among these people surprised me is how big of an asshole he is. If he was this nice guy with the same general policies, using passive aggression to attack liberals, then I’d at least understand how they could fall for him. They taught me not to be an asshole, but then fall over to worship this one.
No. That’s not what happened at all. The CDC said something rather unexpected.
And the fact that your company is interpreting it as a reason to lift that mask mandate altogether rather than just on those who are vaccinated is exactly why.
The last thing we want is for people to stop getting vaccinated. We need them to get vaccinated to keep the virus from mutating to escape the vaccines. That’s part of the reason for keeping the mask mandate: so that those who don’t have a vaccine are still inconvenienced.
If everyone, not just the vaccinated, start pulling off their masks, everything I’ve seen says that infections will then go up. I will be very happy if the CDC has data showing otherwise, but I’m not risking it for a few weeks, to see the effects. It’s not like other organizations who thought they knew what they are doing is wrong.
Any responsible organization would only allow masks to be not be worn by the vaccinated, and would require some level of proof that this has occurred. Only after waiting a bit would they drop the requirement.
And, again, if you are in any way sick, not even with symptoms of COVID, you’d better wear a mask. The CDC already says anyone with COVID masks or traveling has to wear a mask, but now that we know that you can prevent colds and the flu with a mask, you’re an asshole if you spread that shit.
To think of all the money wasted on education and research when all we needed to do was ask ‘’‘rational’‘’ people what the answer was in their ‘‘expert’’ opinions.
The “rational people” always conveniently forget all the things they thought they “knew” that they turned out to be wrong about, but remember the rare cases where they guessed right, and think that indicates their superior wisdom and common sense.
I think we’ve had a couple of stories about bars in Washington state running afoul of mask mandates and such; not sure if we’ve seen this particular bar before or not:
