Fucking maskholes and vaxholes

How about, “I won’t wear a mask” meets “Stand your ground”. Because not wearing a mask can be construed as a threat.

(Okay, it’s a bit of a stretch, but it’s less of a stretch than quite a few other times it was claimed. Like that dude in FL who though a car full of teenagers playing loud music was a threat.)

Good fucking god, Trump supporters are the vile filth at the fucking bottom.

I’m guessing Winn-Dixie assumed zero compliance, so a hopeless endeavor, until Trump chimed in with his “patriotism” and “China virus”, when they decided it could work after all. Or I’m giving them way too much credit.

Once you drive north of Sacramento on I-5, people start getting nuttier and nuttier - like Eastern Oregon nuts.

My 19 yo daughter attends college in Kansas City, MO. She joined the BLM protests multiple nights out there in recent weeks. She got tear gassed and shot at with rubber bullets by the police. I’m proud of her political convictions, but fearfult of her high-risk status—she’s asthmatic. The tear gas triggered an asthmatic attack (rales), but she recovered quickly. However, she assured me that most people, including the protesters, wear masks in her city.

I worry more about my 17yo daughter who lives with me in Florida (where Covid-19 is currently spiking hard). She was born with a congenital disorder that causes strokes (moyamoya). She’s had 3 strokes. The worst was when she was 15 months old. It was triggered by the flu and left her with permanent paralysis of a hand and foot. Covid-19 would likely be a killer for her.

There are far too many “maskholes” in my town. They delight in posting their anti-mask bullshit on social media and our local Nextdoor.com website. I’m not surprised that dangerous idiots exist, but I am shocked at the sheer number of them that abound in close proximity. I estimate ~30% of my county refuse to wear a mask.

Weeks ago, they put it to vote in our county to mandate wearing masks indoors in public areas. It was voted down by 3 of our 4 county commissioners That pissed me off, and resulted in my daughter and I sequestering even tighter in our home.

The following week, 1 of the 3 dissenting commisioners was admitted to the hospital with Covid-19. Last I heard, he was in critical condition in septic shock and organ failure. I wouldn’t wish this infection on anyone, but it did seem a bit of karma was involved.

They put the mask mandate up for vote again last week. Surely the 3 remaining commisioners would vote pro-mask this time, right? Nope, they shot it down again.

Thankfully Publix grocery store grew some balls and starting tomorrow will require customers to wear masks to enter their stores. So, at least I can stock up on some Little Debbie Nutty Bars.

Hell, I ain’t even going going south or west of Connecticut for the next couple of years.

I am sorry you’re dealing with this. I have relatives in Florida, including a beloved aunt near Daytona. I lived not too far from that area briefly (years ago now), and I can definitely envision a lot of ‘maskholes’ there. I think the only thing you all can do is what you’ve been doing: hunker down. Get stuff delivered if you can.

The Winn-Dixies here in South Florida have been mask required as soon as the local government mandated it about 8 weeks ago.

I wonder how much maskhole behavior is still driven by ignorance.

Example: I recently went into my office for the first time in weeks so our IT guy could work on my laptop. It’s a building built for 40, and we were the only two there. I had a mask on, and he didn’t.

When I subtly suggested I had an extra mask he could wear, he replied, “They keep this building really clean and there’s hardly ever anyone here. I’m not too worried.”

Then I stopped being a passive nice guy and said, “I’d be more comfortable if you wore one,” and he did. But that’s not the point. The point is, he still seemed to think the mask was for his own protection.

Despite all the public announcements and news about masks, how many people still think this?

Yes, there is genuinely innocent ignorance - I find that this is true even among somewhat educated folks.

But there’s also defiance, a general refusal to abide by rules. Some people know that coronavirus is potentially dangerous and that masks can help stop it but don’t care because they just want to be “free.”

Fighting ignorance: The pee-mask gambit.

I think that Trump voters really started to resist wearing masks when it became understood that black and brown people were dying at higher rates from the virus. I think that for a lot of Trump voters, they see this as an opportunity to exterminate blacks and any blathering about personal freedom is just cover for what they see as a feature of COVID.

I wonder about this myself. I still see a lot of memes on Facebook saying things like, “If your mask works, why do you insist on me wearing one? Won’t yours keep you safe?” Whether or not people really believe this, they certainly talk as though they do.

The one that most annoys me is the “You’re living in fear” rhetoric. I mean, if you’re not afraid of this virus, you haven’t been paying attention. Don’t people realize that there are a lot of things that it’s perfectly sensible to be afraid of, and to change your behavior to try to avoid? If I give up smoking because I’m afraid of cancer, or try to lose weight because I’m afraid of diabetes, or put up smoke detectors because I’m afraid of my house burning down, am I “letting fear rule my life?” Or am I taking reasonable precautions to try to stay safe and healthy?

I don’t really like debating on Facebook–it never seems to accomplish anything–but that’s what I always want to say.

I wonder if those same people counsel their kids to have indiscriminate, unprotected sex, because otherwise they’re living in fear.

Seems pretty clear that they have been doing that for a long time.

The problem is that once these idiots get into the store, they promptly pull the mask off or down.

But they didn’t say you had to wear it inside! You only have to wear it to get in!

I hate these jerks so much.

True. Those Covidiots are worst of all. Not only are they putting others at risk, they are purposely rubbing their defiance in our face.

Last week, my nephew in South Florida blew up on a shopper in line behind him at the grocery store. Covidiot did not stay 6’ behind and wore his mask under his chin. He coughed, close enough for my nephew to feel the breeze. Nephew tore into him with a string of creative curse words (and apologized to the cashier for doing so). Maskhole grinned and replied, “chill, bro!” They came close to fisticuffs.

That’s what happens when you talk first and wait till later to punch.

“Oceania was at war with Eastasia: Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.”

The first think I thought of when I heard the news.
