OK, the USA isn’t the most popular nation in the Middle East, it’s true. But (and I’m not including you in this) when you see people in the US saying the “whole Middle East should be nuked into glass” because of what a small band of terrorists in Al Qaeda cells does, it’s not a lot different from seeing the man in the street in Baghdad or Gaza venting anger at the US because of what a small band of terrorists in the White House does.
CP Abdullah is pretty much in charge already. The king has health problems so severe that he is barely hanging on and has no time for governing. I am unsure what kind of reform the CP can make. To really change much, the guy would have to repudiate the Wahabbi doctrine that legitimizes the house of Saud, something that ain’t gonna happen. The other changes he would need to make are social but that can’t happen without rooting the immams out of the government.
The Saudis have a “separation of church and state” problem and I don’t see a way out for him. The Sauds have allowed the immams to get into the government in a big way. Education is run by mutawwa or “Hiya” and they have put a hard-line religious slant on every course for the previous 30 years or so. The immams are also heavily into the security sector which is a very bad thing right now.
Due to the schools having a hard-line slant for years, the average Saudi does believe in the Wahabbi doctrines. This makes him automatically xenophobic with a special hatred of anything Jewish. The royal family is educated abroad and so are much more open minded about such things. “Abdullah Aveerage” pretty much believes what he has been taught all his life.
