Well, serious deja vu. I get a call last night at around midnight informing me that yet another compound has been blown up by a religious lunatic with a car full of C4.
The last time this happened I wound up with a skinned and cut-up child bleeding on my pants while we tried to soothe her.
We lucked out this time, it was only a single guy living in the compound and he was away when the bombs went off. His house is levelled; all his belongings are scattered, burned, or looted but his skin is intact.
Shit, religion plus weapons makes a bad combination.
Thank you. I’m getting very tired of getting these calls in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, I don’t know the other Dopers in RL. Paul in Saudi was based in Jeddah so he’s probably OK. I’m unsure about the others.
It looks like the death toll isn’t as bad as they made out to start with, 5 or 6 instead of the 70 or 80 they first thought.
The odd thing is that the terrorists seem to have had a heavy machine-gun to kill the guards and a cop car to help them beat compound security. Going home tonight is going to be a treat, heavily armed (and bearded!) guards all over the place.
Some day, Saudi is going to wake up and realize that their religious holy-men types are killing them.
This was an odd attack though. During Ramadan they aren’t supposed to be doing this kind of crap.
Thank you.
I’m not sure I agree about these not being religious. After all, they have sufficient belief to deliberately kill themselves. What greater demonstration of faith could someone ask?
We knew something was up when they closed the US Consulate.
They must have moved on to a softer target due to the increase security around the Diplomatic Quarter.
We’re in the Eastern Province, increased Security everywhere, but for how long?
Thanks. Good to hear things are well with you. Someday we need to have “SaudiDope.” S
The DQ looks like Fort Knox right now. Unless I was dying, I wouldn’t get within miles of it.
I wonder what the hell these guys thought they would accomplish by blowing up a bunch of Moslems in the middle of Ramadan? The whole thing seems counter-productive.
And let us all not forget the wise and soothing words of President Bush (The Younger) who has declared on many occasions that Islam is a religion of peace that has been hijacked by extremists.
Fucking terrible. Glad the death toll wasn’t higher, though I hear from the Irish news there are still people missing.
I hope this doesn’t bring back too many ghastly memories. Keep safe.
Just a minor quibble - though tell me to fuck off if this is an inappropriate place for it - while these bastards were almost certainly operating out of “faith”, the Tamil Tigers utilized extensive suicide bombing, even though they were secular.
So did the secular, quasi-socialist Kurdish PKK, among others. But I agree that it is a near certainty that these folks were religious by any objective definition.
I, too, have sincere doubts about the religious motives for most of these, especially if it’s, as reported, Al-Qaeda based.
Sure, the people doing the ‘blowing themselves to flinders’ thing are motivated by religion. But it always struck me that the people actually running the show, the ones who set policy and plan actions, are actually more about establishing political power for themselves than anything else regardless of what they say in their PR messages.
You think things wouldn’t calm down if OBL found himself in charge of a significant chunk of Saudi Arabia et al?
Since you live in S.A… I’m stunned by your ignorance.
May I suggest that you inform yourself about the religion which you claim asks people to “deliberately kill themselves”.
Suicide is not an option for a Muslim.
So instead of blaming the religion, look behind what you like to see. All these types of actions are political inspired.
Maybe you could blame for these actions equally the Western governments who support a regime that blatantly disregards every basic human right and that is on its own - merely by being established - a hijack of the religion Islam?
If you are a guest in a country, some basic knowledge about these kind of things is only a matter of politeness, don’t you agree?

So you mean: because he lives there he can change Islam at will until it suits his view on it?
I’m Muslim since birth, my home is in the MENA region, in addition I made of Islam my studyfield and thus became authorized to teach it.
Which I don’t do yet which makes it - even ignoring the fact that I’m Muslim born in the MENA region - a bit obvious that I know a bit what I talk about.
Have a nice day. Don’t hurt yourself with that excercise you described.

Forgot to say: Murdering other Muslims - and people in general - is also forbidden.
And since we are in the month ramadan some additional informatin: every form of agression, even an agressive thought, is strictly forbidden.
