OK Cupid may be as well known for its tests and quizzes as for its dating/social element. They’ve just posted a new site-created “IQ” test, in which you get to pick the mini-tests you take.
I scored better on spatial than verbal, indicating that this is no more reliable than any other online “IQ” test – but it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
My real-life spatial intelligence is actually pretty bad - I have an awful sense of direction and so on - but I usually do better than I think I will on abstract things like this. I’m surprised it beat my verbal score, though.
I only took one social test (the high-fives one) because it made me, and I pretty much guessed my way through it. But I already knew I was socially inept.
That’s really dumb because, in reality, while I’m good at simple arithmetic I am poor at math. My verbal skills are actually my strongest area and have been in all forms of standardized testing since I’ve been young.
I also think the smile test in particular is bullcrap because the transition to frowning at the end really throws off judgment.
Spatial 136
Verbal 104
Social 84
Math 73, which unfortunately I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count up to.
I would have scored better on all points if I weren’t doing this at a public reference desk, but I think the general trend is correct - I like words and pictures, uh-huh, but not so much numbers and people.
I don’t understand why they said that spatial one with “pick the color that doesn’t change” is hard for people. They actually gave me a bonus for it. Who can’t see the color that isn’t changing?
ETA - the results also suggested that I am a stone fox. Thank you, OK Cupid.
Hmm, as a holder of an English degree, I am a bit miffed at my Verbal score, but mostly because it was more of a typing speed test than anything else. Anyway, here’s mine:
I did pretty badly with both the math and social categories (less than 80 in both), which isn’t surprising given that I’m running on 4 hrs of sleep - sociability has always required a fair bit of effort on my part, as does math.
I think I’ll try it again on a full night’s sleep just to see if my results change at all. It’d be interesting to see if they do.
I’m really surprised I got a higher math than I did verbal. I did ridiculously well on my GRE verbal but not so much on my math. As for spatial, those puzzles were definitely the easiest.
Not that impressive a score compared to other dopers, it would seem. Strange as the blurb after virtually every test I did indicated I had passed it with flying colours (I sucked at the smile video but aced the high five one).
