if you really do judge what someone is trying to convey because they don’t capitalize or punctuate properly, then you are missing out on a lot.
I have to say, one the whole capitalisation thing, that sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t…especially words like ‘I’, I find myself being a little less likely to hit the shift key, I mean godammit, people will KNOW what it is I’m talking about regardless of what damn case it’s in.
The issue of people with bad eyesight, well I get the point but fact is, the majority of users have ok eyesight, either naturally or thinks to the opticians and when I post I don’t really find myself considering those who might have trouble reading…or I might post everything like this 
In conclusion, the only thing I’m sure of is that a few of the people posting to this thread aren’t really making a good impression on anyone. If djf750 wants to post without capitalisation, why the hell not? it doesn’t make them less intelligent, just a little lazier than most (and IMO it’s not uncommon to see intelligence and laziness hand in hand). I don’t think the phenomenon cited in the OP is elitism, per se. I think it’s derived from insecurity – people generally dread the prospect of someone mocking what they like. Film reviewers are particularly prone to automatically sneering at a popular work. It makes them seem more intelligent and reduces their vulnerability to criticism from their peers.
Speaking personally, I thought the Matrix was interesting but goofy in parts. Then I thought it was goofy in a few more parts. Recently, however, I’ve come to think of it as a classic film.
But really, it’s not wise to read too much into other people’s reactions. You don’t know what they think, or why. Besides, who cares what they say about the film? I ain’t got no rooster in that cock-fight.
