A bit of setup: Rick Mercer is sort of the Canadian equivalent of Jon Stewart–a comedian “newscaster” who sends up politicians and riffs on world affairs. And on his previous show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes (roughly the same as The Daily Show), he had a segment called Talking to Americans–a sketch that had him talking to random Americans in the U.S. and getting answers like: “What’s Canada’s main export?” “…igloos?” “Staplers!” “Snowshoes?” “And as for our prime minister, Tim Horton’s…”
Anyways. One of his most famous questions was: how many states does Canada have?
Rick went around, asking all the people he could find. Answers he got: “Uh, I dunno.” “Ten? Twelve?” “Lots…”
