I don’t get how the 3 makes another S or the 8 makes a BR.
I think the 3 = B in L33T
ETA- OK, I just realized how patently obviously wrong that is. I’ll leave it up for the giggles. Time for coffee.
Ghoti is an old device often credited to George Bernard Shaw to demonstrate the perceived need for spelling reform.
Pronounced thus:
gh as in tough = f
o as in women = i
ti as in nation = sh
So ghoti = fish.
By the same rules (with a bit of license):
O as in women = i (or in this case, E)
ngl = ngl
o as in women = i
ti as in nation = sh
So Ongloti = English.
A similar device mentioned in the link is ghoughpteighbteau = potato, but that’s a few characters too long for a license plate. ![]()
New rule: Each vanity plate must be followed by a parenthetical or spoilered explanation, please. Hence, WNTSETL (“Won’t settle”).
One I saw just yesterday in Atlanta, on a Honda Fit: “2B TIED”.
Just saw this morning, on a yellow SUV, “BOM SHLL” (“bombshell”). Couldn’t tell if the driver really was that hawt.
An electrical engineer I work with has a Delorean he brings in from time to time. The plate says “NO FLUX”.
A couple of my favorites in south Orange County, CA-
APOLOGY on a black BMW driven by a lady old enough to be my grandma (saw it at local Starbucks & took a phone pic).
NAZGUL on a Ninja-type motorcycle.
SSABMUD- seen in your rearview mirror, it says DUMBASS. For real- I took a phone pic of it from the next lane over!
WEEWEMD- urologist at our local hospital.
FEATURE on a VW Bug.
KEYLIME on a bright green VW Bug parked at Irvine Valley College- I think it’s a professor.
Me too- a mom at our school drives an SUV with ICUNHVN on hers. Gah.
No, actually you won’t. ![]()
I see what you did there.
Just spotted these this week:
TRMIN8R - but Ahnuld wasn’t behind the wheel.
CHOC GAL - on her way to the candy store, I’ll bet.
I saw one yesterday with LVNLRG. I chuckled.
Just saw TRPNOUT (“Trippin’ out”).
One today is confusing me. It was a dark blue Toyota Corrolla and the plate said “Nevrblu.”
This confuses me. Does it have some Pop culture reference I’m missing? 'Cuz, I mean, the car was blue. . . ?
Is it some kind of Dadaesque thing - you may think the car is blue, but it really isn’t?
OMGWTF must live near my parents because I keep seeing it around there.
A local driving school has a Student Driver car with the plate PRAY4US.
My state has a special license plate featuring a large lighthouse on it. Today I saw one of those with the plate number: PHROS. (I assume, a reference to this.)
Seems kind of obscure for a license plate to me. Are they an archaeologist or just a nerd? Also, does that mean that PHAROS was already taken?
Just saw “SB TO PV” (spaces included), which puzzled me. Does it mean the car was a gift, from, say, Sam Booth to Pam Vinson? Or does it mean “Southbound to Puerto Vallarta,” or something else? Any guesses?
On sports car belonging to physicist:
X DOTDOT
Just saw this morning: 10IS4ME (“Tennis for me”).
