Futurama: Bender's Big Score (open spoilers)

Well, I don’t know whether the eye is an issue, but otherwise Leela is smoking hot.

One other thing is, have they ever established a firm timeline before? I don’t know if it’s a good idea to come right out and state that 8 years have passed since Fry was unfrozen. It sort of forces you to age the characters, or else it doesn’t make sense. Is Amy still a student? Also, when Santa showed up it seemed like they were planning on it being an Xmas episode for next year (or later) on TV. That might disappoint people when they see it’s 3007 in the episode.

They’ve at least vaguely acknowledged the passage of time, yes.

She’s really only been a student in what, one episode? She’s probably a career student.

I don’t think anybody is going to care.

As for Leela… she’s fallen for some crummy guys pretty fast and she’s used to being ignored. So this time she happened to get it right. The Lars idea was a good one, really, because on the one hand she can’t end up with Fry - it’s absolutely true that he’s too immature - and on the other hand, she can’t not end up with Fry.

Someone go back and check their DVD for when fry re-freezes himself so he can arrive at his own funeral. I think he set it for like, 2 or 3 years.

It was 7.95 years.

Wow, Fry’s 33 then. Maybe its about time for him to mature a little bit?
(according to wiki Lars was 49!)

If he did that, he’d be more mature than his audience! :wink:

Watched it yet again… liking it more.

So is Paradox Phillip Fry (Fry’s Nephew) doomed? I mean Fry coming back does (as pointed out earlier) change the events of Luck of the Fryrish and therefore creates a new Phillip J Fry who knew his Uncle.

Or is it just when two parodoxes exist at the same time that one must die?

BTW what about Fry In “The Why of Fry”? He creates a parodox by requesting a new Scooty Puff SR to escape the InfoSphere. He escapes therefore isn’t trapped and therefore does not go back to attempt to stop his freezing which means he can’t tell past Nibbler to make sure he doesn’t get a Scooty Puff Jr, therfore he ends up being stuck in the Inforsphere where he… Aggggh my brain hurts!

This is why time travel in SCI FI is such a PAIN!

That’s altering history, not creating a ‘paradox double.’ The paradox doubles - two of the same person in the same place - are doomed.

Again, I think he just changed history by making Nibbler decide to give him a Scooty Puff Sr. instead of SP Jr. There’s no paradox, just one Fry who went back from the Infosphere to the year 2000 and then returned to his original time.

Time travel is a mindfuck no matter what you do with it, but this version was entertaining, so that’s something…

Hmm…episode idea-“Farnsworth’s Cat”. Put Leela and Fry in the box-they will be in a superposition of screwing/not screwing states (kind of a disturbing mental image while I think about it actually). Or should that be “Leela’s Pussy”?

This sucked! Based on past episodes, it is currently Dick Cheyney’s responsibility to protect the time continuum, but where was he during all this? This thing was ripe with jokes waiting to happen, but they passed them all up with references to past episodes. They must have an entirely new set of writers, and I expect to be disappointed with future episodes.

In other words, John, tomorrow’s outlook is cold, bitter and jaded. Also, my wife left me.

Back to you, John.

Bender’s Big score was co-written by David X. Cohen and Ken Keeler. Cohen, of course is co-creator and executive producer of Futurama, as well as the head writer. Cohen wrote or co-wrote the following Futurama episodes.

* "Space Pilot 3000"
* "Xmas Story"
* "Anthology of Interest I" (co-writer)
* "Anthology of Interest II"
* "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" (co-writer)
* "The Why Of Fry"

Keeler has written or co-written eight of the original Futurama episodes:

* "The Series Has Landed"
* "When Aliens Attack"
* "Put Your Head on My Shoulders"
* "Anthology of Interest I" (co-writer)
* "The Honking"
* "Time Keeps on Slippin'"
* "Godfellas"
* "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings"

I don’t understand why people are having trouble understanding how Lars has a copy of the time code tattoo on his ass. At the end, Bender goes back and puts the tattoo on Fry’s ass. On the original Fry’s ass, in the freezer. That’s the tattoo’s origin, paradoxical or not. Lars starts out as a copy of the original Fry; thus, he’s identical to the original Fry, including the time code tattoo. Simple, no?

Regardless, I think most folks have it right on the overall work: too many callbacks to the earlier episodes, not enough investment in coming up with new jokes. Not to say that it’s bad; just not as funny as it’s potential. Also, the time travel plot was so complex that I found myself just trying to focus to keep up with it, so that some jokes (including sight gags) probably just flew past without being noticed.

I also think having Bender be under someone else’s control dulled his edge too much. A lot of the humor we’re used to from Bender is “up yours” stuff; he didn’t really go there much in this film.

Look at it this way: even if the DVD is not up to snuff, by buying it (or having someone get it for you as a Christmas gift) you helped encourage the producers to make more Futurama, which will probably be better than “Bender’s Big Score.” Good times, eh?

I just saw it and I liked it. I think it’s a decent episode, and it’ll grow on people after their overly high expectations die down. I guess they ignored or reset the series final ep, where Fry and Leela go off together.

I liked the math lecture, too. I’d noticed the 1729 references, but never realized there were all those codes in the background.

Or Fry said something stupid twenty seconds after the episode was over. It made for a fine series ending but it was nothing definitive.

Brains…

(I hope this isn’t too zombified to come back). Of course, the movie features a zombie so I think it should be cool.

I just watched it and I have to agree with those who say it wasn’t as good as original Futurama. Too much metahumor (though some of it was good stuff) and not enough laugh out loud lines.

But I can’t believe the thread ended without anyone figuring out how Fry came up with the name “Lars”. He names himself Lars because he knows that Leela falls for a guy named Lars. When he finds out he is Lars, he names himself Lars because that’s who Leela falls for. It’s the same deal as the Time Code Tattoo.

Now, any news on DVD movie #2?

The rumor mill points to March 18th, but the Futurama fans over at the PEEL think that is a bit early.

Well, this just got broadcast as four consecutive episodes on Comedy Central last Sunday, and while I generally enjoyed it, my DVR cut off early, so I don’t know how it ended!

The last thing I saw was the multiple Benders beginning to explode and Nibbler yelling about the universed being destroyed and then… :eek:

So, how much was there left that I missed?

Nothing, that was the end of the episode.

It’s a big cliffhanger for movie #2 (The Beast With a Billion Backs), which has a release date of June 24.

Not much. Just the huge tear in the space/time continuum.
