Just saw it, it was pretty good. Not my favorite episode but possibly in my top 10 or at least top 20. The Devil’s Hands was a better “finale” I think, but that episode was ridiculously good and almost impossible to top. But it was a fitting end to the series and I’m fine with Futurama being done forever. I will enjoy rewatching it from time to time but I don’t really think we’re missing out if it doesn’t get revived somehow in the future.
I did like the bloody Avenge Us! over the opening titles.
They did some of their best opening title gags the last few weeks. “Not the one with the dead dog” is probably the only one that ever made me laugh out loud.
Yeah, that was good.
I also really liked the second to last episode. (I think. I missed the last couple of episodes as they aired before this last one. I just assumed the mini-marathon was in order.) The one with Zoidberg getting the girl. It wasn’t a great episode but I thought they did right by Zoidberg. They dump on him through the whole series and then give him what he always wanted, companionship/friendship/love.
I have no idea why but that episode delivered on a top 10 laugh out loud moment for me at the end. KAJIGGER!
Yes. That moment could have been during his childhood.
Hence the extreme openness of this Open-Ended Finale–the Professor might have grown up to have some life that had nothing to do with a delivery service. The show’s characters might never have met.
Good point, all we can say for certain is that Fry will still be frozen since that happened centuries before Farnsworth was even born. With the butter fly effect it’s even conceivable that none of the other characters will even be born (save for Nibbler, the various heads, & possibly Mom).
I was thinking maybe there was a line I missed implying it was 13 years earlier implying time would jump back to the beginning of the series.
I think the intended conclusion is that he’s going back a short way and that Fry will propose to Leela but won’t have the time button to screw around with. But you can read it lots of other ways.
I agree with Marley23. When I saw the episode, I initially thought Prof. Farnsworth, Fry and Leela were all going to go back in time together. This didn’t make a lot of sense to me: Fry and Leela would remember their first life together, but they wouldn’t be able to repeat anything, because they’d still be old- the time button not reversing accumulated time for the user is a major plot point of the episode. Then it just occurred to me that if Prof. Farnsworth goes back in time alone, and meets up with the other characters once he arrives, he alone will remember the events of this episode, and will choose to not build the time button. Fry and Leela will be young and have no memories of this episode.
I actually felt jealous when Fry was fluffing up the koala for a pillow.
I just watched the most recent finale, and was impressed. I think they did a great job with the ending. They could still do a movie, or an episode, if they want to…yet we have closure.
I think there’s only one logical interpretation of the finale. The Professor says he modded the device to “release a single huge anti-chroniton blast. It should rip us out of stasis back to the instant before I conceived of the time button… of course we won’t remember anything that’s happened”. (emphasis mine)
Therefore all 3 go back. But they all won’t remember the events in the episode. Therefore, in the absence of external inputs, quantum events or God playing dice, there won’t be any change to affect the sequence of events. So the events in the episode will play out exactly the same, in an unbroken time loop.
However, it isn’t clear what the anti-chroniton blast does to the rest of the universe. Does it resume with or without Leela and Fry’s changes to the world?
If “without”, then time would not appear to stop when the button was smashed and everyone except Professor Farnsworth continue on as normal. The Professor should be able to tunnel to the busted button and reassemble it and create a new time loop.
If “with”, then food will pop out of existence, along with Leela and Fry. Urine and BMs will pop into existence. The Bronx Zoo pandas will be found mysteriously sixty-nining with koalas on top causing animal behaviorists to develop a new theory of animal inter-species kinkiness.
These events could be studied and understood. An time expedition might be launched, which would introduce external stimuli to the time loop, which would free the characters to do new episodes and future adventures.
