Truly vexing. Never had an issue with my Gmail before sending attachments/ photos embedded into emails. Now, when downloading them into my Mail account on the iPad, I encounter a few weird changes.
Photos do not appear. There’s a small question mark in their place. When I am OFF line, the ? is present. When I open up a WiFi connection, the photos appear.
Photos may or may not download even then. But when I remove the WiFi signal, the photos are gone. How can this be?
FWIW you could try AquaMail, if they have an iPhone app. I stopped using GMail on my Android device because it kept reverting my messages to unread status, and I got tired of reading the same messages over and over.
The one minor limitation with AquaMail is that the free version only allows you two accounts; if you want more than that you need to pay a little money for the Pro version.
Interesting glitch there. I use an Android phone. Have 3 Gmail accounts entered into it. Read mail appears as such. The title and first sentence is not bolded. Unread mail is bolded. Works like a chahm. ( Verizon Motorola Droid X2 )
I’ve noticed this sort of thing when being sent photos from gmail accounts. The photos are displayed as remote images, not as actual local downloads, so if your ipad is not connected to the internet, there is no way it can load the image. In other words, it’s sort of like viewing a web page. (I think, anyway, I might be wrong about all this.)
Also, make sure that in your Mail settings, “Load Remote Images” is on. If it’s off, you will always get the question mark.
Also also, testing this on my iOS 6 device, when images sent from gmail aren’t loading in an email there is a dialog at the bottom of the message saying “This message contains unloaded images,” with a button to tap that says “Load All Images.” Does that dialog not appear for you? If you have an older version of iOS, maybe try tapping the question mark (after making sure you are indeed connected to the internet and able to load remote images) and that might load the image.
