Anyone had issues getting GMail on iPhone?

I’m new to iPhone. I’ve always used Android. I’m using the Mail App on the iPhone 6. I set it up and I was getting notifications for new emails for a few days, then they stopped.

I opened the mail app and have the error “imap.gmail.com is not responding. Verify you have entered the correct account info in settings” Settings are correct. I went into Gmail on my laptop and verified IMAP is enabled.

I’ve looked up the issue on Apple and Google support. Google advised deleting Gmail from the mail app then following a link authorizing access from a new device, then add Gmail back to the Apple mail app. I did so and it worked fine for a few days, then notifications stopped and I once again get the same error.

If I download the gmail app notifications work fine.

Apple advised turning off cellular data and Wi-Fi or just put in Airplane mode for a few minutes. Re-enable and try again. That didn’t help.

If I hit ‘OK’ on the error message and manually refresh my inbox, the new emails will show up.

Has anyone had this issue and if so were you able to find a permanent solution ?

I haven’t heard any permanent solutions so far (but it doesn’t affect me, so I haven’t looked too much into it). It seems to be one of those voodoo problems where some solutions work for some and not for others.

Did you try going into your Gmail account security settings and turn on “Allow less secure apps?” That one seems to have some success.

If none of it fixes the problem, a workaround is to forward your Gmail emails to your iCloud email or any other email account that works. Depending on how often you need to check your emails, that might be easier than tapping “OK” and manually refreshing your inbox.

Was your Gmail account set to fetch at certain time intervals? I’m totally guessing here, but that might be the problem. If that is indeed the case, another workaround is to keep the Gmail app installed so you keep getting notifications, but in your iOS Mail settings, set Gmail to check manually. That way you’ll know when a Gmail comes in via the Gmail app, but you can then just go to the iOS Mail app and check Gmail manually.

But I dunno, I’m just spitballing those ideas.

Thanks abuzz. I’ll try the less secure app suggestion. Yeah I can always use the Gmail app but I really wanted just the apple email app. I’m sorta OCD about keeping my phone as streamlined as possible. It looks like this issue goes back to at least 2013 based on a Google search. You’d think solving it would get a bit more priority since so many people now use gmail as their primary email address.
