Help with gmail emails on Mac/iPhone please!

I currently have a gmail account, which I use with Apple’s Mail to automatically download onto my Mac when new emails arrive which up until now has worked well. I rarely go into gmail via Firefox, so when I do, most emails in there are marked unread, even though I have read them all in Mail.

In the past few months I got an iPhone, and would love to use this to read emails, and have configured it up fine. The problem is that according to gmail/my iPhone I have several thousand unread messages so anytime I delete them off my iPhone, my phone gets loaded with the next 50 or so. This makes the icon notification fairly useless (hard to tell when I do get a new email).

I’ve checked in Mail, gmail and my iphone settings to see if there is any way for the Mail program to notify gmail that the message has been read, but I don’t see anything that would achieve this. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

I think you can configure the iphone to only look at the past 3 days or so, which should clear the backlog pretty quickly.

It appears you configured Gmail and the iPhone to use POP, which does not support marking messages as read while still on the server. Using IMAP will take care of that issue.

Moving thread from IMHO to General Questions.

Thanks - that seems to have solved that problem, but I now have another issue - sorry for sounding pathetic!

2 mailboxes are showing in Mail now - one has a folder called Inbox, with emails received in Jan, and a Sent folder which has emails I’ve just sent.

I also have a set of folders under Gmail, one which is called All Mail which includes all emails I’ve sent and received as well as spam - but doesn’t split them out - i.e. no ‘inbox type folder’. Is this something I have configured wrongly within Mail, or Gmail?

Oh, don’t worry - looks like it was just taking a while to sync my Gmail and Mail. All seems to be working now, thanks for making my iPhone even better than it was!
