Gabriel Garcia Marquez reported dead at 87

Rumor has it that Gabriel Garcia Marquez has died.

Chalk it up as another “he was still alive?” death. Still, a truly great writer and an early inspiration for me.

Bummer. I’ve always loved his work.

Guess he’s ready for a lot more solitude.

That’s just it. He may come back if he decides he cannot bear the solitude of death.

Was it cholera?

Now I guess he’ll wander around the backyard all the time, until he slowly gets forgotten. Or maybe he’ll drag around a bag of his own bones. Or float off among a three-year plague of butterflies.

Confirmed by several media sources in the last hour. A few days ago, there were reports of his health being in a fragile state.

RIP

I recently read In Evil Hour and plan to read more of his work because I loved that book.

I heard this news just a couple of hours ago on the radio.

A death foretold?

RIP Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Hope you didn’t pass away in a room that smelled of boiled cauliflower.*

One hundred years of Solitude is one of my favorite books. Amazing writer

Mine too. Many people dislike the book, but I was fortunate. As an undergrad, I took a course in Spanish literature that was taught in English. The prof was a Colombia expert and a huge fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. We read One Hundred Years of Solitude, and the prof did an almost page-by-page analysis. He told us lots of little in jokes and esoterica that would not be apparent to your average Joe, or at least not to your average non-Colombian. It was really neat.

Even though he has been dead 10 years a new novel with the English language title Until August is coming out March 12:
