Gah! The cross-poster followed me over here! Deepest apologies to fellow Dopers!

I patronize several hobbyist MBs, and I will just say that they fit under the broad general category of “arts ‘n’ crafts”, okay? So there’s this–person–who during the summer registered at ALL of the boards, with the same user name, and has been posting identical “Can I do this?” questions to ALL the boards. Copy and pasted, no pretense of being a different person.

Now, I dunno how many of you post on hobbyist MBs, but the general feeling is that it’s kind of an insult to post a question on MB #1–“can I do this?”–and when the answer is, “Um, no, you can’t”, to then go find another MB and post the identical question over there. “Can I do this?”

“Um, no.” And then the next day she pops up at MB #3, and then MB #4. Same user name, same Copy and Paste question.

Now, what does she think is going to happen? Is she just asking until she finds someone who will tell her, “Sure, honey, go ahead and do X, it’ll be fine”. Which it won’t, but she won’t listen to us.

And let me make it clear, it’s not a general sort of “advice” question, like “what do you guys think?”, it’s always a very specific question, something dumb and obvious like, “Can I put sugar in my gas tank to get better mileage?” (extrapolate that to arts ‘n’ crafts). We tell her, “Um, no,” and then there she is the next day, at MB #2, asking them/us (because there are a number of us who also post on the same boards), “Can I put sugar in my gas tank to get better mileage?”

And she will also put the same question in several forums, like she’ll put it in the “Gasoline Mileage” forum AND in the “101 Uses for Granulated Sugar” forum.

So, anyway, earlier in the summer I evidently was unwise enough to post a link to something on the SDMB in GQ that answered a question she had, and now this week I see that she’s registered over here.

So here’s a personal message for you, Ms. Can-I-Do-This? Cross-posting is not welcome here on this message board. Just because we have umpteen forums does not mean that we want you to post the same question in all the forums. Please read the forum descriptions and post your threads appropriately.

'Cause, baby, these folks over here got teeth.

[sub]looking forward to her first encounter with manhattan[/sub]

Is it possible to cross post to many different forums at once?

If you don’t think so, I’ll ask again in “About This Message Board”.

Have a nice day.

It is not possible in vBulletin, nor is it recommended that you do it the manual way either here.

No you’ve got me all curious. What does she want to do?

And what’s her name so we can gossip about you with her behind your back?

Was it the fly larvae person ? huh ? Was it ? Tell us or we will post threads holding our breath untill we turn purple. :stuck_out_tongue:

Now, now, children…

[sub]no, it wasn’t the fly larvae person, but no fair guessing, I’m not trying to be deliberately tantalizing, I’m just hoping she’ll wander into the Pit and take a hint[/sub]

Tease!

Well, I got it, at least.

Avumede, you are VERY NAUGHTY! More please.

[sub]To make sure you get this message, I’ll it again in all forums here and at Opal’s site and Una’s and on Snopes and…[/sub]

Redboss

I bet it’s the “Can I coat a mountain with mashed potatoes and go skiing on it?” person.

mischievous

Posting a link to these boards probably was a bad idea, but since cross-posting her will surely get her kicked out I’m sure you haven’t done much harm.

Maybe it’s just me, but I would’ve replied to her with something along the lines of “Sure, you can get up to 37% more mileage by putting sugar in your tank, but it’s gotta be a perfect 35/65 mix of dark muscavado to pink confectioners’ sugar. Best wishes and good luck.” That’d teach her

I’m sure I’ve been on a dry ski slope where they did just that.

You could always tell her about the neat way to speed up your computer:

/Start/Run/type in “FORMAT C:”

[SUB]To the humor impaired:[/SUB]

DON’T DO THIS!

Don’t worry, Polycarp, you won’t get any complaints from people who did it

DDG, exactly what hobbyist message boards do you hang out at? Care to share some links?

Utterly gullible and also not very smart about computers, Cranky carefully writes this procedure down, opens her Start Menu, and begins typing…

Polycarp you forgot the most important part of that command.
To do it right its Format C:/U, that way the tech won’t be able to unformat the drive and recover the disc.
Peace
