Galaxy SII wi-fi tether not working

I’ve got an unlocked Samsung Galaxy SII, not fixed to any network. It’s running ICS and isn’t rooted.

I have bought the PDANet app, which does a fine job of tethering my 3G to my laptop via USB.

PDANet also offers wifi tethering via the ‘FoxFi’ app. Doesn’t work.

The Galaxy’s wifi hotspot works fine, broadcasts its SSID, and my laptop (Dell Inspiron) can connect to it - but it gets no gateway IP assigned. I can’t ping public IPs either (e.g. 8.8.8.8).

The Galaxy also has its own on-board wifi tethering, and I get exactly the same symptoms if I try to use this.

Has anyone successfully managed to tether a Galaxy SII? If so, how did you do it? Any experience with PDANet or FoxFi?

Is the problem more fundamental: can my mobile provider’s SIM affect the ability to pass internet via a wifi tether?

My Galaxy S II works awesomely well with tethering and with a wi-fi hotspot for anything I’ve ever trying to use it on, including my Galaxy Tab. I…don’t know how to fix it for you.

Mine just works. I use hotspot and tethering with no external app. (Hotspot for the tab, of course.)

So I guess my useless datapoint is that, well, it works for me?

Good luck.

ETA: Sim might be the issue if the provider charges for tethering or wi-fi hotspotting, but I thought that was only possible to control with an iPhone.
