I just got this game project eden. I have typically run the latest 3d games with no problem. Ive asked Tech support but they didnt seem too sharp. How odd huh?
The game freezes up completely at what seems like randomn points. When it does I need to hard boot. No CTRL-ALT-DELETE works. Typically if I load a saved game it will freeze up again at the same place. However, if I start fresh I can often get passed the point with no problem.
None of the freeze points seem graphically or sound intensive but what the hell do I know. Here are some sys stats:
The only recent change Ive made was installing DX 8.1 to be able to run another game, but I hadnt installed this new game yet.
Im wondering if the total freeze with need of hard boot offers any indication of where the problem lay. I tried the game forums but noone seems to have this problem. Tech support also said noone mentioned this problem unless a save game was corrupted but I’ve frozen from the get go.
Any recommendations on what might be happening? I know the voodoo 3000 is ancient but if I can get away with it on this game Id prefer to do so. Should I turn down the graphics and/or sound acceleration? Im using the default configs in the game that are allegedly recommended by the software. It puts me in 640x480 so the game already looks like Pong but C'est la vie. Please help.
Definitely go into the config and see if dumbing the game down gets rid of the crashing. That usually works for me on a system where the defaults are really high; there’s usually a fair amount of wiggle room. 640x480 sounds pretty low, though; Halflife only has a couple levels of resolution lower than that. I’m not familiar with the game you’re talking about; have you checked at gamespot.com? They usually have pretty good fixit info, or links to it, for most games.
DirectX 8.1 might be a problem. I’ve heard some rumblings that it isn’t all that stable but I haven’t seen an official review of it yet so I don’t have a cite.
I also found the following on their forums. While this person is using a Voodoo 5500 the problem seems darn close and might help you as well.
That said your Voodoo 3000 is a bit out of date and you might consider replacing it (hey…Christmas/Hannuka/whatever is coming up soon…good time to ask for a new card or at least money/gift certificates towards the purchase of one). Nvidia is offering a rebate to Voodoo owners who buy an Nvidia product so now is as good a time as any to make the jump.
More info on the trade-in details can be found here.
I hate to hijack, but since you have no email addy on the boards…
Are you the same KidCharlemagne that posts all the kickass comparison stats on Footballguys message boards? If so, let me give you a much-belated welcome to these boards. Your posts there are really, really good.
Its a really long shot, but when I was playing Deus Ex, it would freeze up at exactly the same point in the game. The only way I could find to fix it was to play all the way through again (I didn’t mind, the first part of the game is the most fun anyway). It worked fine then, its a mystery.
