Game of Thrones 2.10 "Valar Morghulis" 6/3/12 No Book Spoilers

Remind me – who’s Meryn Trant?

So, since magic has just recently returned to the world, is that why we haven’t heard the characters reference Faceless Men before now? Are they relegated to folk tales like the dragons and the White Walkers?

Because if people knew they existed, it seems people there’d be talk And people would be more suspicious of each other. “Varys, is that really you?”

Meryn Trant is the kingsguard who Syrio was fighting against and who was shown alive and well afterwards.

Yeah , I should have specified ygrette as the wildling chick.

Declan

Well, there goes that theory. Dammit.

We heard about men who can change their faces like other men change clothes (or very similar words) back in season one. It was during the bathtub sex scene between Viserys and the whore who would become one of the Mother of Dragons’ handmaidens (then betray her).

Yeah, but that’s just because some of the goons have a truly massive hard-on for Syrio :stuck_out_tongue:

While we’re talking about Syrio, here’s the thing about him that’s been bothering me since season one: he’s being attacked by swordsmen while he only has a wooden sword. Syrio takes out a couple of swordsmen before his wooden sword is reduced to a stump.

So WHY does he not GRAB one of the DISCARDED SWORDS? Surely that would be better than saying “Hello Death, yes, today”, wouldn’t it? You can clearly see at least one sword on the floor.

We don’t see how the fight turned out, but the implication is that Syrio gets killed. Certainly Meryn Trant survives unharmed. That scene has been the biggest annoyance of the whole series for me.

He’s a fencer, those swords are not what he knows how to fight with. And he was doing great with the stick until it got chopped in half.

If I were a fanboy of his I’d convince myself he shape-shifted into Meryn Trant.

Except that we’ve seen Meryn Trant in King’s Landing since then, I believe, while Jaqen was on the Kingsroad in a cage and/or at Harrenhall.

That’s assuming Syrio and Jaqen are the same faceless man

Sirio Forel was First Sword to the Sealord of Braavos for nine years. I doubt he held that position without being proficient in all kinds of swordplay. And the practice swords were not fencing foils, they were wooden broad swords.

Yes, that’s the speculation as I understand it. If we’re going to assume multiple faceless men, then anything goes, doesn’t it?

(FWIW, I’ve always found this idea kinda of wishful thinking, but that’s just MHO.)

Ooo, I like that theory very much!
