And toss Tywin Lannister into the same mold. Take away those wee foibles ( betraying liege lord x2, assassinating brother with foul sorcery ) and you sort of have in these men the medieval platonic ideal of good lords/kings. Intelligent, confidant, firm, skilled at warfare and politics and honorable by the strictest definition of rewarding the loyal and capable ( including generosity when generosity is called for ).
Tywin and Stannis at least would make “good” kings and would go down in history books as capable rulers. Robert would also have a good rep, because he was larger than life, successful at war and generous - the fact that he was a drunken spendthrift who scarcely governed at all would be ignored. Joffrey of course would go down as “the mad” :D.
He outlawed their preferred method of meting justice (flaying) throughout the North, I think Robb mentions that. And obviously the Northerners don’t run torture shops.
Roose happened to empower said bastard, even though aware that he’s a little on the completely unhinged side - to the point of killing his own men to further a “ruse” that’s pretty much only about his amusement.
It’s also implied (though as of yet not proven either way) that it’s him, not the fleeing Greyjoys, who burned down Winterfell. That was before the Frey/Tywin deal.
Admittedly, that’s not directly on Roose - but a manager is responsible for his underlings, and since he’s a bastard it’s not like Roose was saddled with him and had to find him a cushy job. He deliberately picked the psycho for his cruelty, and possibly egged him along or shaped him to be that way.
Well, one involves breaking the most important oath in the feudal system. In a culture that punishes oathbreaking very seriously and considers it one of the worst crimes there is (worse even than mere murder).
So there is that ;). But yeah, from a more modern standpoint, not much difference.
The wife and I have just started watching season 4. Watched the first episode last night and was jarred by the new Daario. So the old actor found a better part, is that what I gleaned from this thread? It was a little vague. Never even noticed the Mountain had changed actors.
