I’m confused about Tyrion going to see Tywin instead of immediately escaping. He went to his chambers unarmed. What was he planning to do? That seemed very foolish and unnecessary. Did he think he could have a confrontation with Tywin and then he would just let him go? He would have ended up back in his cell. Of course it was played for dramatic effect, finding Shae and then daddy’s death on the toilet, but the way of getting to those plot points makes no sense. It sort of took me out of the moment, though I did gasp at seeing Shae.
Wow, they ended the season with a bang! Stannis and his army come to the Wall. Great battle between Brienne and the Hound. Some nail-biting moments as Bran & Co. try to evade the skeleton squad. Glad to see a warm parting between Tyrion and Jaime. Tywin meets his fate at the hands of his long-suffering son. Interesting hint that Varys will now be taking ship with Tyrion.
I bet that would have changed everything if she had just whipped that thing out from the start.
I thought he knew, too, but maybe he was in denial.
I forgot about that. I thought he was saying in no uncertain terms that he knew the truth.
He was certainly referring to the rumor but that isn’t necessarily an announcement that he believes in it. This is obviously a man engaging in doublethink, probably to maintain his own peace of mind.
I have to admit the parting of Tyrion and Jamie got me a little misty.
I did know the Tywin and Shae spoiler in advance (from a spoiler site, not the books) so I wasn’t shocked but I was surprised about Varys hopping on the boat with Tyrion. You have to admire his quick decision making in that situation.
Except for a little bit of shaky cam / jump cuts, the fights were pretty good. Brienne winning was believable because she fought dirtier – nut punches, biting part of his scalp off, and good old rocks to the head. I was amused that Brienne seemed to be hurt more by the cunt punt than when the Hound got punched in the family jewels. It was a little bit Hollywood though. Realistically Brienne should’ve been done when the Hound was on top and punching her in the face. But it also didn’t make sense that he was able to get up from a kneeling position and deck her when she was trying to show mercy. Seems like she could’ve just chopped his hands off.
Podrick is the worst assistant ever! First he loses the horses, then he doesn’t do jack to help in the fight.
I laughed when Jojen was sitting there being mechanically stabbed over and over by the skeleton arm. I dunno, that just looked kinda goofy.
Daenerys, Arya, Brienne, and Ygritte have throngs of fanboys. But sure, you cracked the code.
People like to hate Cersei, and I guess I do too (in that I like her scenes), but she seems like one of the most realistic characters in the show, aside from the incest part maybe.
I’m confused how he even got there. Shouldn’t there be guards, servants, castle staff, or someone? Did Varys/Jaime make them all go away? That’s some serious string pulling
Tyrion used a secret passageway to access Tywin’s chambers. He enters via a trap door in the floor, if I recall correctly. Varys gave him a map of all the secret escape tunnels during the siege in season 2.
Deep down Tywin knows the truth about Jaime and Cersei, but even if Maury Povich was waving the results of Joffrey’s paternity test right in his face Tywin would never admit it out loud.
Agreed, and he didn’t just grant her passage. He gave her a cabin which she specifically said she didn’t. Even if he doesn’t think she’s a Faceless Man he’s clearly terrified of the consequences of not giving her the appropriate hospitality.
It’s been made pretty clear that a woman can in fact inherit in the absence of male heirs (though as soon as she marries her husband rules in her name). That was the whole point of Tywin marrying Sansa off to Tyrion is that she’s nominally the Lady of Winterfell. See also Brienne being her father’s heir and that woman Bronn married being 2nd in-line to her father’s title after her spinster sister.
I think it’s clear he never had any intention of letting his father live.
Well, since you said “sort of” then Bran watching Jon fighting from a distance “sort of” counts.
I had several issues with this episode, especially with my two favorite characters being too merciless.
Arya straight up letting the Hound lie and suffer, when he was begging, that was too much. The Hound wasn’t that bad. We know that he certainly wasn’t bad enough that he would do what Arya just did. He was under orders to kill the butchers boy. I cannot really root for characters who basically do torture.
Tyrions killing of Tywin didn’t exactly hit the mark either. First, I’m not really convinced that he had done enough bad that he deserved to be killed. What is the worst thing he has done? I guess it was to not fight against the evidence in the court case, and try to get his son to go free. But that assumes he is sure of Tyrions innocence. Also, his plan was never to let Tyrion die, but to have him sent to the wall, which seems decent enough. Tyrion did not give Tywin that option, and as with Arya that seems more ruthless than the guy they are punishing.
Also, what was his initial plan walking into Tywin’s room unarmed? And plus he greatly endangered the people who saved his life by this detour. That seems extremely ungrateful. Overall, another character I feel like I can’t really root for anymore.
And it seems all if Tywins critique of Tyrions lying with wh… prostitutes, wasn’t so much about the fact itself, as wanting Tyrion to be more clever about hiding it from the public.
Tywin throughout the show has made his hate and contempt of his own son obvious, remember the aftermath of the King’s Landing battle?
And in an earlier season Tyrion recounts how his father had his wife gang raped by soldier then forced Tyrion to rape her as well.
I think when you’re hiring rapists for your daughter in law, and then essentially raping both her and your son by forcing them to have sex, you cross the moral event horizon.
In the earlier scene between Tywin and Cersei, Tywin says “Tyrion’s sentence will be carried out tomorrow” - ie, Tyrion will be executed.
Which, to me, confirms that he really did plan to have Tyrion executed, and that he was lying to Tyrion and trying to manipulate him into not shooting. All that stuff about Tywin secretly admiring Tyrion and really being his son after all - that was bullshit. And Tyrion knew it. I certainly got the impression that if Tyrion had agreed to put down the crossbow and go to Tywin’s chambers and talk things over, Tywin would have grabbed the weapon and started yelling for guards.
He did not have many other options at that point. He was going to give Tyrion a pardon, and let him go to the Night Watch, and Tyrion knew this. He could have done more to find out the truth, but then, so could all other people in that trial.
I don’t think hate an contempt is enough reason for me to condone cold blooded murder.
I was replying to the part of your post where you said you didn’t think Tywin would actually go through with executing Tyrion, I think he would have.
Oh right. Yeah, at that stage, I believe you are right.
To be honest, I am worried about the direction the show is heading. I know we’ve heard about “Winter is Coming” and have seen stuff north of The Wall for some time, but the focus had always been in other areas, “Fantasy without the magic” as the show was first sold to me by a friend.
Now it seems that two massive players in the story going forward are precisely the two areas I am the least interested in: Dani and Brann. Frankly, I have found the whole “tree, three eyed raven etc etc” part so boring and now it appears we have more annoyingly bad child actors and a ramping up of the magical side of things (hell, someone was throwing fireballs). That isn’t the show I was enjoying and I am worried that as it continues I am going to become less and less interested.
The very first scene of the whole show was ice demons animating corpses.:dubious:
So this elf girl throwing fireballs…I take it we now know the other player in the ice and fire title? Or does everyone still assume it is dragons.
But it has always been a minor part of the show, which I found refreshing. White Walkers etc have very rarely been seen. Now it seems to be ramping it up, more like Lord of the Rings with boobs and swearing.
Yea but it was clear that eventually shit was going to go supernatural.
