Who killed whom.
I think it was as simple as Robert not wanting Stannis around because he is a dick.
He used the money to hire mercenaries i think.
They’re referencing the casting of a witch named Maggie the Frog with a very comely actress.
Wow, I don’t get that at all. Possible, I suppose, but I really doubt it. Just seems too far out of left field.
Stannis is honest, brave, hard-working, diligent and committed to lawful rule, but he also burns people who don’t adopt his faith or bow to him, willingly had his own brother magically slain when Renly wouldn’t yield to his claim to the Iron Throne, cheated on his wife with the Red Priestess, and has all the personality of a carrot. And he did lock up Davos for awhile for letting Gendry get away, didn’t he?
Don’t think it’s been explained. I would speculate that it’s some folkloric/traditional way to scare off demons - if they think you’re still watching out for them, they can’t sneak up on you and steal your soul after you’ve died.
Melisandre seems very interested in royal blood, Ned was never king and she is not a queen. If Jon Snow was their love child then he has no royal blood. It seems more likely that Jon’s mother died in Robert’s Rebellion. The only women we know who died in the Rebellion were Ned’s sister and Oberyn’s sister who was a princess and was killed by the Mountain. It is possible that Jon Snow is Ned and the princess’ son. Then he would have some royal blood.
Davos saved Stannis and his household from starvation, but Stannis still had his fingers cut off. That showed Stannis being rigid. Dragonstone is an important castle that protects the bay and is far away from kings landing. Perfect for someone who is dependable but would look down at Robert’s ways.
I think we can be pretty sure he wasn’t lactose intolerant.
I agree, it was badly done. She could have sat up enough and hugged her legs with the sheet in between. Sure we may have seen some side boob and butt cleavage but it wouldn’t have looked forced. She could also have remarked about feeling chilly and pulled the sheet up more.
Response to speculation with my own-
non-book based guessing but just in case Jon is either a bastard of King Robert’s that Ned raised because of some connection with the mother and/or realized that a bastard would complicate things with the Lannister marriage alliance.
The dark hair was touted as such a Baratheon trait, I figured it had to mean something.
And/Or he’s the son of Ned’s sister. “You may not have my name, but you have my blood.” Possibly birthed after her kidnapping and somehow survived and not discovered until after the Lannister marriage deal. Or he’s the son of Ned’s sister and the Targaryen that kidnapped her… and it was maybe not an actual kidnapping but them running off together and starting a war. Oops. Ned found baby Jon and took him in knowing that the kid was not safe no matter how things shook out. I do find it hard to swallow that Ned wouldn’t have told his wife the truth at some point. He probably took an oath or something.
As for Stannis… I’m a big fan of the character…and it’s hard because he’s just NOT a character who survives in the long run.
So I always kinda thought it would eventually turn out that Jon wasn’t actually Ned’s bastard, but that he only accepted him as his because of some honor/duty/it’s-the-right-thing-to-do shenanigans (he just didn’t seem the wife-cheating type). That’d leave all possibilities out in the open. Is that option totally infeasible by now, i.e. do we know credibly that Snow is in fact Ned’s bastard?
Oh, her at the beginning? I never caught her name.
We still have only Ned Stark’s word for it.
That was my take as well - they were really mad sulky teenagers but weren’t trying to burn her.
I have a question - during the scene of Mance’s burning, they showed Jon Snow standing next to another member of the Night’s Watch who I definitely recognized but can’t remember what his story is - is he Roose Bolton’s spy?
That guy got Hodor-ed last season at the raid on Crasters.
Ned said that Jon had his blood. That to me indicates that he was his father, but maybe he meant something else. Ned was very stubborn but very honest, he could have promised someone to not tell and at some point it will be come important. I never questioned it until Melisandre started eyeing him. She seems to know things.
But she wouldn’t have been harmed even if the dragons did try to roast her. (Although her dress would probably be burned off.) But what if they tried to bite her?

Did Ned have siblings?

Yeah that would’ve changed the scene completely - as shown I’d say they weren’t really trying to hurt her.

Ned had an elder brother and a sister, betrothed to Robert Baratheon.
The brother and their father were killed by the Mad King and the sister was abducted and killed by the Mad King’s son, Prince Rhaegar.
This series of events is what triggered Robert’s Rebellion when Robert and Ned successfully fought to dethrone the Targaryens.
Daenerys is also the daughter of the Mad King.
Tywin Lannister was the hand of the Mad King, but he avoided choosing sides until it was clear that Robert and Ned had won. Then he sent in the Mountain to kill Rhaegar’s wife and children and the Kingslayer to … slay the king.
See how it all comes together in a circle?
Though Tywin didn’t send Jaime to kill the king. Jaime did it himself to prevent the city from burning.

I realized that as soon as I sent it. And also the rape of Liana Stark came first.
