Game of Thrones 5.06 "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" 5/17/15

Wasn’t at all surprised by that little revelation. She did hate the Hound, but her feelings towards him had become far more nuanced than that by the time they parted company. A different story might well have her feeling conflicted remorse for leaving him to die; as it is, at least for now, she believes her own narrative about their relationship. (Which raises interesting questions about what it means to “lie” that I don’t think the show is going to have time to deal with, i.e., is it a lie if, at the time of the statement, you sincerely believe in its truth, even though you were present and witness to its falsity? Blah blah. Boring philosphy stuff, man.)

I mentioned to my friend while watching that one of the German generals in WWI–Ludendorff, IIRC–tended not so much towards grand strategy as to the more prosaic plan of “poke some holes in their lines and see how we can capitalize on that”. Littlefinger seems to be of the same mold.

Character is like, 14, and has just been elected [del]President[/del]. On top of that, he was at least one step down the line of succession. Until Robert Baratheon had his hunting accident, he wouldn’t have been expected to ascend to the throne until he was an older man–and that assumes Joffrey produces no heirs. He is literally the most naive, manipulable, inexperienced, inappropriate person for the job person in all of Westeros.

On top of that, he botched his “Kingship” roll first when he had himself taken to the Sparrows instead of summoning the High Sparrow to court, and then again when he failed to have his Kingsguard face off with the Sparrows. I doubt it would’ve come to blows, and if it had, the spin of a fringe religious order attacking the person of the King is pretty damned easy.

See what I mean? I’m just some schlub in 20th Century America, and I’d be a better king than Tommen.

It’s too obvious and too satisfying, but I’m still hoping that the additional emotional strain causes Theon to “break” again and murder the living daylights out of Ramsey in the most satisfying way possible.

Well, if nothing else, you can always go watch him on Ripper Street. Plus, I understand he was a bit of a musician in his younger years–I think he gave us all a little taste of that this episode…

Well, I can’t look at the article because I don’t want book spoilers. So I’m just going on your summary here. Surely this will turn out well, right?

…actually, right. I think possibly this particular thread of the conversation belongs in the other thread, or even (best of all!) in a separate thread of its own that can explain the I-am-totally-not-going-to-prejudge-the-batshit-crazy-arguments-oh-shit-i-just-did-didn’t-i article you’re posting here without giving too much away that’d actually impact the series.

Just sayin’.
