Game of Thrones 5.07 "The Gift" 5/24/2015 [Show Discussion]

Even better, her entire plan to jail Margery hinged on the fact that they don’t give a rat’s ass if you’re the queen, they’ll arrest you all the same.

Surely Tommen has to act now. Unleash the King’s Guard on those fundies.

So much for Ceresi’s “I should have been born a man”…she couldn’t even handle a couple of nuns.

Not being on trial for murder? Or at least something along those lines?

I don’t think killing someone that was trying to kidnap the princess would be a big deal.

I think sparing a fighting, fucking, signing hedonist like Bronn is exactly what a daughter or Oberyn would do.

The high sparrow will be sitting on the iron throne by next season!

I mean easiest seizing of power ever? Just what will prod Tommen into taking his king’s guard and chopping up some fundies?

Shows just how stupid Cersei is. Hell, they’re all dumber than a bag of hammers.

WRT Cersei and Tommen’s fate, there is the little matter of the prophecy. Cersei was told she would see all her children take the throne, and that she would see all of them die. So Cersei snuffing it before Tommen’s killed is unlikely (unless GoT breaks the unwritten script law that All Prophecies Must Come To Pass, and they would never do THAT, would they?)

Of course, Tommen could die in the next episode, and Cersei in the same episode, but afterward, and the prophecy works. Except that her daughter is still alive, and has not taken a throne, and does not seem likely to anytime soon. So either the prophecy gets tossed, or Tommen and Cersei’s storyline has a ways to run.

When Tommen threatened to take the King’s Guard and kill all the Sparrows, even start a war if he had to, Cersei said, “And do you know who the first casualty of that war would be?” She meant Margery. That could be holding Tommen back more than anything.

I believe stannis comes before my cell in the line of succession.

The prophecy only said that the kids would sit on “a throne” not “the iron throne.” So Mycella might be sitting on a throne elsewhere.

No. If they are using (as it seems) English style male preferance promiginiter than Robert and his “line” comes before Stannis and his line.

Otherwise for a real world example, niether Victoria or Elizabeth II would have inherited the throne as they each had Uncles still living.

Isn’t she about to marry a guy who I suppose is the heir to the apparently sickly prince of Dorne?

Also, maybe she would become queen if Tomnen were to die (or it would be Stannis? Exact succession rules were never made clear).

Sure, but has never stated that it works this way. There are systems in which females inherit only if there’s no remaining male (can’t remember how it’s called). And even where they never inherit, period.

Sure, but has never been stated that it works this way. There are systems in which females inherit only if there’s no remaining male (can’t remember how it’s called). And even where they never inherit, period. It might also be that the case never happened before for the iron throne, and they’ll make up the rule on the fly, in the way they invented the Salic law in France when they lacked a direct male heir for the first time.

And in fact, in GoT’s world, rules seem to be quite relative. See the discussion between Sansa and Ramsey. The legitimate son might have a better claim. Well…forget about GoT. Just look at how it played in real life. An unclear claim with a big army trumps an obvious claim with a small one.
Unrelated : the High Sparrow speech about the few and the many : not only do we have a religious fanatic, but also a revolutionary. Just behead them all and install the Sevenist Republic of Westeros :stuck_out_tongue:

Jorah running out and being a badass was very cool, but how in the world could things have gotten that far in the first place? Hasn’t slavery been very publicly abolished? Okay, maybe if the qualifying matches were held in private, outside the view of any royal officials they could have gotten away with it, but right in plain view of the queen? She hates the fighting pits and has been very adamant that only freemen would participate. She certainly should be smart enough to start the event off with briefly having everyone declare they are fighting of their own free will. And even without that, wouldn’t at least one fighter think to yell out “My queen! I do not wish to fight, that man is keeping me as a slave!” I’m having a hard time suspending disbelief here.

Daario is right, she needs to round up all the masters and just execute them, or at least institute a policy along the lines of “I know some of you masters are in cahoots with the slavers and harpies, so from now on I’m holding you responsible for stopping it. Every time I find an instance of slavery, one of you randomly becomes dragon chow.”

I’m a bit happy that I was on track with Lansel being Cersei’s undoing. She has been so very, very dumb.

The slave owner paid them each a coin, so they are technically paid and “free” men.

Sure, they’ve been “paid” in a manner that would satisfy a corrupt official, but surely some of them must know that if they threw themselves at the mercy of the queen things would turn their way when the questions start getting asked. Even if they were technically paid to fight, they were still bought as slaves before, which would mean the master’s head. I mean, the odds are certainly way better than surviving in the fighting pits for more than a few rounds.

Did Theon sell Sansa out? Ramsey was already up in the tower. I thought he had found out some other way. Or was that not the tower?

I think we were led to believe Theon was climbing up the old tower while in fact he was climbing up the tower where Ramsay resides.

Maybe, but the Stark inheritance rules seem to indicate that the English rather than the French rules are applied.

Is the High Sparrow a former Lord? His accent seems to suggest so.

Has Tyrion met everyone in the show yet (Wildlings excepted)
