Game of Thrones 5.09 "The Dance of Dragons" 6/7/15 [Show Discussion]

This Lord of Light guy is a real asshole.

I hope Davos is the one who eventually kills Melisandre and Stannis.

Also, I am now completely uninterested in Dany’s part in this story. Everything that happens around her is just silly.

That’s a pretty absurd comment considering the war in Westeros is winding down, and Dany’s story at this point pretty much is the story.

I could be misremembering, but I thought he made an attempt to flee one night shortly after taking his vows, and Sam went after him with another couple of crows. They caught him and persuaded him to remain a crow. Not sure why he was leaving…maybe to avenge Ned, or Robb…

The Unsullied really haven’t performed well at all this season. Granted their training is likely more suited for fighting in formation on a battlefield rather than the wild melee action they’ve seen, but still…not impressed with them.

Agreed. The unsullied have clearly become Worf. It’s kind of a bummer.

EDIT: On a related note, did anyone else find themselves thinking “If a handful of dudes with spears can essentially defeat Dany’s biggest dragon, maybe her dragons won’t be much use at all?”

Oops, wrong thread.

Oh, Stannis you cunt!

But they didnt. The dragon flew off despite all the spears. I will say this; the guys in the masks sure have balls.

Two great action packed episodes in a row. The problem is, theres not enough budget to hot-shot all these special effects week after week. Im curious as to what the season finale will bring.

Hopefully, this is all leading to a final balls-out dragons + wildlings + stanis baratheon army v white walkers three way 3 hour apocalyptic battle to the death special mixing in the Lannisters, Boltons, Starks, Tyrells, and Dorns to wind up final season 7 in a coupla years.

Man, he really must want to be king.

So, I’m starting to think that by the time the White Walkers reach King’s Landing, there won’t be anyone alive for them to kill. You know that’s gonna be a bummer.

As well as being utterly appalling, I don’t think the Shireen scene even made much narrative sense.

There were, prior to this episode, really only two viable contenders for the Iron throne, Stannis and Daenerys. While Stannis had far less material resources, he was the only true legal heir. By rights, the throne is his. Daenerys doesn’t have the same legal right, it could be said she had a moral claim. After all, she spent her entire life being hunted by the Baratheons and was very nearly assassinated, and, although her father was a nutcase, the Targaryen dynasty itself was largely a popular one, given how many houses fought for the Mad King.

Now, although Stannis’s legal claim is still valid, he has no moral claim. He’s a kinslayer, the lowest of the low in Westerosi society. He can’t possibly command respect after this. This really leaves Daenerys as the only candidate that the viewers can sympathise with. At this point, she’s a sure bet to win. Is there much point even watching anymore?

Fucking brilliant fight scene at the end, though!

I thought the dragon riding looked really cheesy. I got a serious Harry Potter quidditch vibe from it.

I’m not seeing much of a shitstorm about this on twitter (relative to the shirtstorm about the rape), even though this is much more harrowing. Maybe it’s too early and we’ll see more tomorrow, but I doubt it.

I’m going to go ahead and predict the final scene next week…

Drogon and Dany flying over King’s Landing.
Other predictions…

Davos takes the black after figuring out WHY the snow is suddenly melting.

Olly kills someone…“because he knows it’s right.”

Arya gets found out by the murder genie, but does get revenge on Molesto.

Apparently since rape is still a current issue affecting society it’s more offensive. Little girls being burned alive to appease a deity doesn’t happen much if at all in the real world so that’s not objectionable at all. At least that’s the gist of the ‘rape is super bad and worse than anything else on the show’ line of reasoning I can glean.

Well no biggies killed in episode 9 if you don’t count Shireen, and I don’t, which means episode 10 might produce a big surprise (or it might not, that’s the fun of this show). So I was thinking what major character might die in ep. 10 and I was thinking who isn’t really important in the arc of the show any more. And I do have a candidate: Jamie. He’s sort of been sent out on this side quest to Dorne. But he’s not NECESSARY to the continuing plot. Tyrion has hooked up with Daenerys, Cersei is pretty much at the end of her rope, etc., the Stark kids are all off on different trajectories … I think Jamie might just die. No reason he HAS to die, except it would provide a dramatic conclusion to the show.

Of course, could be that Cersei dies instead. But that would mean the prophecy does not come true.

Maybe there should be a poll thread or something.

Could be Stannis. Seems like he’s worn out his welcome with the audience.

Night King: “And I thought I was an evil asshole. Screw you Stannis Baratheon. I’m going home.”

You know, what happened to Shireen would serve far better as a feminist indictment of the show than any of the rapes. She lacked agency, was not particularly well developed beyond being a traditionally “good girl”, and her narrative role was effectively to facilitate the character growth of the male characters Stannis and Davos. I wouldn’t necessarily agree with the argument, but I think it’s much stronger than any of the kerfluffle over what happened to Sansa.

Regardless, fuck Stannis. What the hell is the point of his war? A whole bunch of people die, maybe he rules few a few years, and now without an heir the kingdom probably falls to pieces again after he dies.

Also, hypothetical counter factual: Suppose Danaerys had originally agreed to reopen the fighting pits, but on the condition that the fights would no longer be to the death. Would that have been an acceptable compromise?
