I know that it was a personal gift. But he should still have handed it to the new lord commander because he’s the one who might sorely need it (IIRC they don’t even have dragonglass left), while Jon is going to fight mere humans. His Sword won’t make a significant difference in this pitched battle, while it can mean the difference between life and death at the wall. He shouldn’t have overseen that.
And how would he know when the WW are coming to knock at the door?

Well the Lannisters and the Tyrells already hold Kings Landing. Realistically no one else has a big enough army to try and take Kings landing, so unless the Tyrells and the Lannisters go to war with each other, there wouldn’t be much of a free-for-all.
But sure Tommen’s death would give another excuse for the Riverlands, the North and Dorne and the Vale to declare themselves independent Kingdoms.
I read in the othet thread a very interesting hypothesis (from a show-based blog, so no book involved). Danaerys will turn to be the real villain in the end, leaving waste, death and ruins in her in her path. The author case was rather convincing, but frankly, more importantly, I would love this this twist (especially since I don’t like this character and find her morality dubious to begin with).
I watched the final scene of this episode with this idea in mind and found that her speech to the Dothraki along with the previous comment about Danaerys stormborn the conqueror fitted well this theory.
I concur wholeheartedly, but I think there’s another aspect to that developing : Tyrion & Varys have turned to the Red Church for allies while Dany is away on her happy fun-fun cremation adventures, with obvious discomfort on their part when the high priestess they expected to simply have her minions praise Dany’s awesomeness promised that people would worship her and burn the unbelievers (to say nothing of Varys’ amazing “what in the world of fuck ?!” face when she started blabbing about his past - that was one of the high points of the ep for me :)). And, apparently, to her Dany’s the Princess The Was Promised.
But Jon is also a Prince That Was Promised, according to Mel who as far as we know is the highest ranking Red priestess in Westeros.
Add to that the High Sparrow plotline and I figure religious fanaticism is a new overarching theme to the series. So we could well get into holy war/schism shenanigans, and those always turn even bloodier than regular wars. Plus I mean, Dany’s deluded enough to figure she might really be some sort of goddess/prophet/messiah. Imagine her cruel self-righteousness, sans Baristan or Jorah to calm her the fuck down, but with a Red priestess to egg her on instead. BURN THEM ALL !
In the behind the scenes video, the director of that episode compared her to Hitler. (technically he said, “She’s not Hitler at Nuremberg, but she’s got the power” - but I wasn’t thinking of Hitler until he brought him up!)
But not the high-powered speakers. I like to imagine that fives rows of riders away from her, the big speech became a Monty Python-style game of telephone. “What’s that she said ? Riding wooden whores on top of great sad stilts ? Sounds precarious.”
I am wondering what Dany will do when she finds out that Tyrion negotiated a seven year plan to end slavery. She plans to be ruling Westros in seven years. She won’t be patient.
Also, we have seen Tyrion’s reputation in Braavos. The dwarf in the play said that he come across the narrow sea to ply his villainy in Eastros. Tyrion may be a liability for Dany.
Heh, heh.
I wonder if Tyrion thinks she’s dead and isn’t concerned about what she would think and is only doing his best to rule the city and keep things from falling apart. “What would Daenerys want” may not have been much of a consideration if it seems unlikely she’s going to come back after being gone for weeks.
Especially since I’ll bet she plans to take her thousand ships from Yunkai and Astapor.
I wondered if she might get her ships from the Iron Islands. I’m having trouble finding a map that shows how close the Iron Islands are to the Easternmost parts of Essos, since the maps seem to all cut that part out.
IDK why the new king of the Ironborn would ally with Dany, but he did just order a boatload (heh) of ships to be made.
I think Jon realized from the battle of Hardhome that they are completely screwed if the White Walkers come now, Valyrian steel sword or not. They barely withstood an attack from the Wildlings, and only because Stannis’s now-destroyed army showed up the next morning. At this point, the only chance they have outside of some Bran-magic is to rally the entire north.
If either Tommen or Margaery are killed, there’s no reason for them to continue to be allies. The Tyrells’ interest in the Lannisters is entirely so they get a piece of the crown. The Lannisters need the Tyrells (because they have no money left), but the Tyrells don’t need the Lannisters if they don’t have Tommen.
In the event of Tommen’s death, the Lannisters might seek other allies, but nearly everyone else hates them. Their only allies are the Freys and the Boltons, who everyone also hates and who have problems of their own. The Lannisters are already up shit creek; without Tommen they lose their last paddle.
Based on this map it seems about equivalent to getting to Trieste from Ireland. The fleet would have to go south around Westeros and then across the Narrow Sea and around most of the south of Essos. It’s a bit of a journey to be sure, but it seems quite feasible for a medieval cog.
Gallivanting? Is that the sort of thing you say when your dick gets chopped off?
Dang it, missed the window
What was the speech Roose Bolton gave Ramsay about fighting a well provisioned Lannister army? I thought that their Lannister alliance was borked due to the whole Sansa thing
Nobody knows that, but in-universe there is a sense that it isn’t tomorrow or the next day, just “soon”.
Absolutely. It’s entirely possible that once Tyrion is recognized as part of Daenerys’ council (if he hasn’t already), that she’ll need to get rid of him to avoid losing the love of her subjects. The seven year slavery abolition plan might even provide the perfect excuse. But by then, the ties with the Red Priestess will have been made, and I can see Daenerys keeping her around. Yeah, that’s a totally plausible scenario.
That doesn’t sound like his style. He’s ruling the best he can, and he’s not afraid to think outside the box to do it. That’s always been Tyrion’s strong suit. He recruited the Red Priestess precisely because he’s still concerned with Daenerys’ approval rating, not because he plans to rule in her name or something.
Tyrion has always been a pragmatist. He’s probably preparing a plan for what to do if Daenerys doesn’t come back (or takes a long time), but I honestly can’t think of a scenario where they keep Mereen if that happened.
That’s how I remember it. The Lannisters have written off the Boltons, although they seem to still be loyal to Lord Frey, since Tommen is sending Jaime to deal with Blackfish.
