Game of Thrones, Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things, 5/8/11

Look, I’m happy if I can tell them apart, and now you want me to remember their last names? Bugger that!

Tyrion is amazing; I find myself laughing delightedly almost every time he’s on screen. My next favorite is Arya, because she’s such a badass. Dany is also really cool; I love watching her come into her own, and I find myself forgiving the director for making her so creepily compliant and subservient in the beginning, because it makes it that much more interesting to watch her change.

Jon? Meh. The Wall is pretty interesting, but as a character he doesn’t do much for me.

I’m going to assume you mean Tyrion, seeing as how we haven’t seen Tywin yet.

Jamie is (IMO) showing a lot more depth at this point in the story than in the books. That’s a good thing.

Otherwise, I think it’s impossible to not like Tyrion. Jon is good, too, in that I find him to be a much more enjoyable character than in the books. In the books, what was going on around Jon made the Jon chapters worthwhile. In the show, I’m actually enjoying the character himself.

Robert is a hell of a lot less likable than I remember him being. Sure, he was a poor king, and he and Cersei never even pretended to like each other, but I always thought that he was likable. In the show he’s a lot more abrasive and crude than I remember.

And of course there’s Syrio. If you don’t like Syrio it’s because you’re dead inside.

Yew tyrion. Apparently I taught my phone Tywin’s name, but not his son’s.

Same as the book, which i consider a great sign. Tyrion, Jon and Arya.

…and 2 more.

Ghost = Jon Snow = white with red eyes
Grey Wind = Robb = at this point has only been seen sitting at his feet at the council meeting.
Lady = Sansa = killed by Ned
Nymeria = Arya = chased into the woods
Summer = Bran = took out the assassin
Shaggydog = Rickon = I don’t think he’s been seen…but then again, Rickon’s had maybe 2 minutes of screentime himself, and doesn’t even appear on HBO’s character guide!

With the exception of the two girls, the direwolves almost NEVER leave the characters side. None have been used more than their bare minimum so far, but sooner or later this is going to have to change.

Concur on all of the above, and even moreso with Dany, as I really disliked her character in the book. Tyrion and Arya were always favorites.

I admit, I am enjoying the Dany/Drogo/Viserys story much better in the show than in the book. I always hated Daenerys chapters (and I even skipped a couple when I didn’t feel like reading about her). I guess I just had a harder time visualizing things across the narrow sea…

I expect that Arya, Jon & Tyrion are going to be very popular answers for the favorite character question. They’re certainly mine!

I never read the books or even heard of them before this series. I really have no idea what’s going on 75% of the time. Maybe more like 90% of the time. There are these two blonde people wandering through wheat fields with the Mongols. On one end of England(hell, I have no idea where it is!) it’s freezing and on the other it’s like California. It’s still great and I keep watching it. Great cast and visuals.

Jesus Christ, people, lighten up on friedo. He’s got a point – some of the characters definitely look alike. I can only tell Robb and Jon apart from context. In the early episodes, I didn’t know which was which.

I haven’t seen the latest episode yet, but as of three episodes in, I’m surprised by how much I’m liking Viserys and Jamie. I haven’t read the book in years, but by my recollection, Viserys doesn’t have one redeeming quality. But – and I don’t know if it’s the actor’s doing, or the director’s, or if I’m just misremembering – Viserys on the show actually has some likability mixed in with his his dickitude. And the actor is giving him an air of nobility (albeit petulant), whereas my recollection is just a total entitled asswipe.

And Jamie is just this smug badass in the books, and I think the actor is just doing an extremely good job of nailing it.

(And I must be the only person on the planet who thinks Dinklage is hamming it up too much as Tyrion. Or maybe it’s because I think his accent is silly. But I’m underwhelmed, but willing to forgive because the Tyrion of the books is one of the greatest all time literary characters; no one on the screen could live up to that.)

Well, that’s really not the director’s fault so much as it’s GRRM’s fault - she’s written that way, and they’re following her arc pretty closely. In fact, I was upset that they made her rider the one who decided that Viserys had to walk - in the book, that’s her call.

Tyrion’s always been my favorite character, and imo the closest thing to a “good” adult character the series has. Dinklage is doing a fantastic job with him, imo.

Can we perhaps, by episode 4, drop the in the book comments?

This program is not the book. It’s a TV show based on the book, and should be judged on its own merits.

Feel free to not compare the show to the book, as you please.

I’ve requested in the past (OP), as well have other posters and mods, that the books be ignored completely in these threads. There’s a spoiler thread for book discussion.

I’m so bored with Jon Snow and the Wall. I wish his screentime was cut and split between the over the sea stuff and more Lannisters. He’s just got such a typical ‘young man goes on journey to find himself and become a better warrior’ thing going on. Booooooring.

I, um, kinda don’t know if I want to admit this, but my ship-o-meter went off on Cersei/Jaime.

Favorite characters are Jaime, Tyrion and Dany.

Wait, then who was with Robert and Jaime in episode 3? The older man that was talking first kills with Robert when Jaime came in and joined the discussion. I kinda just assumed that was Tywin.

Barristan Selmy, another member of the kingsguard.

And I’ll be sure to put any spoilers I might want to share in that thread. But I’m pretty sure the magic investiture you received from whatever Thread Wizard made you King of All Threads Games of Throney did not grant you the power to forbid even mentioning the books’ very existence.

I’m pretty sure it’s standard for the OP to pick the thread topic. Picked that way, btw, by request of many first time viewers and mods.

Don’t be a dick.

I’ll also note that there have been several mod notes on this point. I also would rather not read anything about the books in the episode threads. There’s a separate thread for those who want to bring their book larnin’ into the discussion.

Please, leave the books out of the episode discussions.

You didn’t request that in the OP. You just said it was a spoiler-free thread.

I said requested in the past.

Want me to run down how this discussion started?

Week one thread has tons of complaints about the book readers. Dio starts the thread for discussion as to how the show relates to the book. Subsequent weekly threads are for the show only. Specifically requesting to keep the books out of it.

Sometimes this is ignored. Either someone points it out every time it pops up and is really annoying, or it keeps on. Frank reminds the posters in this thread how it was decided these should go. quixotic78 snarkily replies. I point out the precedence and get more snark.

I didn’t say I said it in the OP for this thread. Merely that it has been discussed over several weeks and that’s how the threads decided to go.

Did you even read the OP before you started posting in this thread, or did you look at it go so you could have your “gotcha!” post?
