I don’t think it has to resort to fantasy mosses to be reasonable. The Free Folk eat anyway. It’s not like they can’t pull a sledge full of food along with them. If they live there, there is something to eat. And they haven’t necessarily been ignoring the coming winter, like most of Westeros has.
No map I’ve seen shows the extent of the area north of the wall. I surmise that no Westerosi has any idea how far it goes, but the known area is quite large.
How Dany provided for the 8k Unsullied on the move was also never shown. Just not interesting TV. And as the old military axiom goes: Amateurs discuss tactics; professionals discuss logistics.
Is episode 10 going to be too busy? We have to get through:
[ul]
[li]Jon treats with Mance. Stannis attacks and scatters the Wildlings.[/li][li]The Hound has to get hurt (looks like he and Arya meet Brienne and Pod) and Arya has to get on a boat to Bravos.[/li][li]Bran and company meet Bloodraven.[/li][li]Tyrion escapes, has an argument with Jaime, kills Shae and Tywin.[/li][li]Lady Stoneheart. [/li][li]Dany chains up two of her dragons[/li][/ul]
Theon and Sansa both seem like they wrapped up in episode 8, but I suppose it’s possible they’re around too.
Quite a few heads should explode at Tyrion’s escape and Catelyn’s return. I hope they do them justice.
And at both Tywin’s and Shae’s deaths at Tyrion’s hands, if they’re true to the books! Yoiks.
I suspect we’ll end her scene with the revelation that it’s the bones of a human child. No need to show how she decides to handle it.
There’s no way they’re going to get to all those events in one episode.
We know that Jon treats with Mance from the previews. Stannis shows up during that. Bloodraven was cast so we know that scene is in. Brienne hasn’t bitten off an ear yet, which we know happens. Lena Headey has tweeted Lady Stoneheart spoiler pictures. I think these are pretty much confirmed. I think the chance of Tyrion not escaping is infinitesimal. There is a picture of Dany from the next episode that seems to be in a basement and we see the green dragon (Rhaegal?) screaming in the preview. I bet they’re all in.
Even if those are the only scenes it would be a tight episode even at 66 minutes.
The Hound has an injury already from Biter. The scene was otherwise pointless except to show Murder Queen Arya. She wanted to cauterize the wound but he refused. I can see it fester like Vargo (but probably not death).
Bloodraven, really? I am surprised, I assumed they’d make it someone else instead of explaining all the backstory of the Blackfyre Rebellion. That would make an interesting “spin off” and the regular cast wouldn’t need to be involved.
I’m guessing Stoneheart is a teaser, with primary focus on the Wall and Tyrion.
So I wonder if Arya/Hound leave the Vale, only to have the Vale guys decide “wait, we should probably investigate if she really is Arya Stark” and go after them, wound the Hound, but she gets away. Only way I can really see it making sense.
EDIT: Also, as far as fitting everything in goes, the scene with Shae on the bed wearing the Hand’s chain was in the Season 4 preview way back when. It’ll be there.
Well the episode is going to be over 10 minutes longer than usual. My problem with the big battle was that it ended in a pause, not a climax like blackwater.
Was there? There IS no Hand’s chain - it’s a pin, on the show.
Martin’s editor now hints it might be EIGHT books - oy vey!: http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/george-r-r-martins-editor-hints-at-eighth-song-book-20140603?utm_source=zergnet.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=zergnet_193583
I don’t think they need to include chaining up the dragons, and Lady Stoneheart’s scene should be short. They could easily get it all in if they don’t waste time with sexposition and beetle stories. Gung! Gung!
Is there really a preview of Bloodraven? That seems a bit premature. What is Bran going to do for the next 2 seasons?
As long as folks keep buying them, GRRM will keep dragging it out. See “Wheel of Time”.
Good point, I was reading too much of my book memories into it. But the shot is of her at night time on a bed, which I don’t think we’ve seen this season.

I don’t think they are going to show Tyrion’s escape. I think we’ll get this:
- Arya leaving the Hound dying, and boarding a ship to Braavos.
- Jon Snow meeting with Mance, being captured, and that scene ending with the arrival of Stannis. Not the battle itself, but just a cliffhanger with Stannis’ ships showing up.
- Brienne and the reveal of Lady Stoneheart, although I think this could be left to next season other than the fact that apparently Lady Stoneheart has already been revealed in leaks for this season.
- Some scenes showing Tyrion being put back in the dungeon, his execution being announced for the following morning, and other events leading directly up to his escape.
- Possibly Daeneris being confronted with the bones of a child and having to lock up two of her dragons.
I just don’t see how they can fit Tyrion’s escape in, because it’s actually quite a long scene. He has to talk with Jaime, get out of the cell, Varys has to lead him through the passages, he has to get away, get the crossbow, confront his father, kill him, confront Shae, kill her, then get out of the castle and get on a ship. Done right, that could take up half the show by itself.
On the other hand, if they do show Tyrion’s escape, it would allow them to open the next season with Tyrion already in Braavos. If they wait till next season to do it, they’d probably have to show more of how he actually got out of the area, got on a ship, found his way to his destination, etc. But with a one-year gap, you can skip a lot of that without it being too disjointed.
The same is true of Arya, I guess. If they wait until next season for her to leave the Hound, they kind of have to show more of her voyage across the sea and her finding the faceless men and all that. If she gets on the boat at the end of this season, they could plausibly start her storyline up again as she’s joining the faceless men and skip the voyage.
If I recall correctly, Jon Snow is basically arrested and is going to be roasted or something when Stannis arrives to save the day. Is that correct? In that case a perfectly good cliffhanger for the season would be to show Snow being captured and told he is going to die. Then they can either show Stannis’ ships arriving as a cliffhanger, or just leave the audience wondering if Jon Snow will survive.
Doesn’t mean the footage shot for him will be in this season. Being cast just means you’ve been hired - not that you’re guaranteed to have footage featuring you aired in the season you’re cast. I don’t think we’ll see this.
Again, these scenes may have been shot, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t moved to next season in final editing. Although I suspect we will see Lady Stoneheart - having her remove her hood and reveal herself to be Caitlin Stark would be a great final scene for the season.
I’d say it’s 50-50. Game of Thrones has a habit of not wrapping up plot threads in the final episode. We’ll see something of Tyrion - perhaps even the start of his escape. Whether we’ll see the whole thing is questionable in my mind.
Yeah, if there’s a scene like that in the preview for the next episode, you’re probably right. But that makes it less likely that some of the other seasons will also be there.
Also, we don’t need to see the Hound be injured - he’s already got his potentially fatal wound. Arya commented in the last episode that he was already moving at about half speed. The next scene with them could open with them walking or riding down a road, then having the Hound collapse. Arya leaves him, heads for the port, and shows her coin to a ship captain and says “Valor Morgulus”. The captain says, “Okay, get on board.” And that’s the end of her scene for the season. One segment for the Hound to collapse and Arya to decide to leave him, then another segment later in the show where she shows up in port and shows the coin. So I’m guessing we’ll see that, but it could easily be left until next season. We might not see her and the Hound at all in the next episode.
I can not IMAGINE that we we won’t get that (although I don’t think we need to see him literally walk downstairs and go to the harbor and get on a boat). 99.5% guarantee that Tywin and Shae will be dead and we will at least know that Tyrion will be getting on a boat.
I think the key point in Arya’s arc is leaving the hound to die. I think we’ll see that, likely will see her getting on a boat to Braavos, because that will only take 45 seconds or something, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that is left until next season.
I’m 95% sure that Lady Stoneheart will be the end-of-season-stinger, meaning that most of the other plotlines will be at least somewhat resolved. Stannis will show up and it will be clear that the wildlings will be defeated (if not how things will play out after that).
66 minutes, counting credits, so say 60 minutes of show time:
15 minutes for beyond the wall
8 minutes for Arya
8 minutes for Dany
8 minutes for Pod and Brienne to be captured by the brotherhood
20 minutes for Tyrion
1 minute for Lady Stoneheart
I think it will be something along those lines.
(And I wouldn’t be SHOCKED if they did Lady Stoneheart as a post-credits scene, given how utterly shocking it is… cut from Tyrion to black, start showing credits, quickly fade up behind credits to Pod and Brienne being led into the brotherhood’s HQ, being led, being led, being led, end of credits, two lines of dialog, camera pan over to Lady Stoneheart, bam!)
Err… they haven’t done these in the past, right? I haven’t been missing a bunch by not watching past the credits, right? Right?
I can see the Arya and Brienne plotlines being the least important. Your timings look good. I wonder whether Tyrion or Stannis/Wall or Bran will be the “main” story.
