Game of Thrones Season 6 open show/book discussion thread [spoilers]

I took it as “we will act like you’re the father from now on”

Cool - thanks!

Don’t go there: Kick the Dog - TV Tropes

The helmets were the same as worn by the Kingsguard we’ve seen before, and they had the Targaryen three-headed-dragon crest on their breastplates (appropriate, since their liege would be Mad King Aerys), but no white cloaks.

Eh, not necessarily. The dragons are smart and know, or can figure out, that Tyrion (a) couldn’t hurt them if he tried, and (b) is actually there to do them a solid.

I wondered about that. Ned picked up Dayne’s sword and took it with him into the tower - is that what becomes Ice?

I like the cut of your jib, SenorBeef.

As did I.

Hope not. Ice is supposed to be the ancestral Valyrian blade of House Stark. Not Dayne’s sword reforged (and Dayne’s sword, Dawn, is pale milkglass colored, which they decided not to show).

Since this is the book thread, I can tell you that Ned later returned Dayne’s sword Dawn to the remaining Daynes, in their homeland far to the south.

Makes no sense as Bolton. There needs to be a pie-r and a pie-ee or else it’s just a person eating someone they don’t care about. They could’ve done it if dear old dad were still alive, and he ate Ramsay (although neither would get too bothered by human meat).

Looks like they have people cast for Black Walder and Lothar Frey, so there’s a possibility it will still happen. I think they were background characters before whose names you wouldn’t know without reading supplementary material, though.

Ian McShane is still “unknown role.”

I thought McShane was heavily rumored to be Septon Meribald.

He his. He’s talked about the role in interviews.

It’s all just tits and dragons to him, though.

Smalljon and Greatjon Umber were both killed at the Red Wedding. Not sure about the show, but in the book, Smalljon even threw a table down in a last ditch effort to shield Robb from the crossbows.

I assumed the guy meeting with Ramsey was another brother – SmallerJon perhaps?

In the books, Greatjon was captured and Smalljon was killed. In the show, Greatjon died of natural causes and we saw the Smalljon in the latest episode.

I was actually disappointed all the way around. Why no Gerold Hightower? No white cloaks or Kingsguard armor? The two swords thing was silly (and the whole fight to me looked a lot like the “swing at their swords” mistake that a lot of movies/shows make).

Personally, I also kinda always assumed that Reed won through some sort of poison or other trickery, not just stabbing a dude in the back. So that’s a bit of a letdown (though of course the books could fix this). I’m also hoping that perhaps Gerold is up in the actual Tower… maybe the writers thought Ned needed someone to talk to (AKA exposit) in the scene where he actually reaches Lyanna.

The helmets match (though they look oddly beaten up for some reason), but the Targ armor doesn’t ring true for me… the current-day Kingsguard all have a crown logo on their breastplates, not a stag or stag/lion or anything like that. They’re also much more gold, versus the silvery Targ ones. That, plus the lack of white capes, makes it look like the guys defending the Tower of Joy are just Targaryen bannermen, not Kingsguard.

I totally disagree about the two swords being silly. That was a well choreographed fight were I believed one man could beat six-- without that stupid ‘attack one at a time’ crap. I don’t think that would have been possible or believable with one sword.

Yeah, whoever they got to the choreography for that fight needs to be involved in every single fight.

Thanks, didn’t see that. No official announcement, but it’s like 99%.

Supposedly he was one of the guys there, but I don’t recall him being named.

Huh, apparently Season 4 mentioned Oswell Whent at the Tower of Joy. So unless he’s up in the tower there’s a continuity error.

Except when Dayne killed (I think it was) the next-to-last guy other than Ned and Howland, and lingered over the throat-cutting for several seconds. That would’ve been the perfect time for either of the two good-guy survivors to dart in and jab him.

They would have had to do it from the front and then he would have lifted one of his swords and then we would have had another 10 minutes of sword-play. Jabbing him from the side or back “isn’t done” with those who follow knightly things.

I’m glad the show is mostly up to date with the books so I can stop going “but that wasn’t in the books/by the books/not in the books” and can watch the show for itself.

But I still want to read what the books will be. My imagination is strong.

I’m pretty sure there’s a featurette about this guy on the the official Game of thrones youtube channel.

Especially if the Sand Snakes appear in a future fight. Though I secretly hope the entire Dorne subplot would simply and quietly disappear with no further mention. Well, not so secretly I guess.
