Gamers - ever see the old Spelljammer scale model ships at a Con?

Obscure as hell, but if the SDMB doesn’t have anyone I can’t imagine who would.

Way back when I was a wee one (say, late 80’s) TSR came out with the rather silly Spelljammer expansion for AD&D. Basically, it was D&D innnnnnn spaaaaaace.

All in all, nothing too cool.

However, I did have some fun at Gen Con with it when some TSR folks were running Spelljammer sessions that involved boarding actions with cool miniatures and AWESOME ships that were built to the scale of the minis. These ships had all sorts of removable bits so you could put miniatures in the cabins and everything.

I remember that the ships were quite awesome, everything from human galleons to even cooler Illithid Nautilus.

I’m looking to build something similar, but I need some inspiration. Actual real to life model ships will be the wrong scale and things like interior cabins will either look really cramped or really silly. The ones I remember looked…right for the figures involved. Admittedly, that was at 25mm scale and not the currently popular “heroic 28mm scale”, but still.

I seem to recall that they were featured in a Dragon Magazine article, but I can’t find the issue. I also have to believe that they’ve made it to the internet somewhere.

Can anyone help me out?

I’ve never seen stuff specifically for Spelljammer like that but I do see regular ships and modular components for space ships all the time. Depending on the spelljammer ship you may be able to use one of those. And if you get a regular ship you can use it for your Space 1889 games, too!

I can’t recommend a specific manufacturer to you but I can confirm that it’s out there. I tried digging out a catalog with that stuff in it and I didn’t have any luck finding it I’m afraid.

Would any of World Works Games stuff work? My husband has a ton of Spelljammer stuff, but we don’t play it.
