Help me decide. I have a gift certificate on Amazon I want to use for a game. I can’t wait until the new Zelda comes out, so I was thinking either SoC or XLII.
I’ve read, and watched, some reviews of SoC. I keep hearing “beautiful,” “best game on the PS2,” “challenging the whole video gaming paradigm.” Sounds pretty awesome. Yet, I’ve never played a game like this that I know of. I keep hearing about a game called ICO, but don’t even know what game that is. The game basically boils down to: Chasing down these Colossi, in order, and climbing all over them to figure out the best way to kill each one.
I have X-Men Legends I. I enjoyed it. Could have been a teensy bit better. I’d have liked being able to go back and find some hidden items I didn’t realize I’d need until it was too late in the game, but the game kept me pleasantly occupied for a week or two. I’ve heard XLII is much the same, with minor improvements in most of the areas people found fault with the first one. It’s basically a little bigger, and a little better.
Which to get? Oh, and speaking of X-Men Legends II, I could get it for the PS2 or the Game Cube. Anyone happen to know on which platform it’s considered better?
ICO is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Get it instead.
I haven’t played Xmen, but Colossus is a beautiful game that will keep you driven for the twenty or so hours it takes to beat it (more, if you start over on hard mode). At least give it a rental.
I’ve played them both all the way through and…don’t particularly recommend either.
You seem to have a good handle on both games. XL2 is more of the same but a bit better. SotC is pretty and different, but not very deep; I finished it in about 11 hours (I’m an average gamer) and, while you can play through it again, I don’t know why you would.
I recommend pre-ordering the next of Prince of Persia game instead. Comes out December 1st.
I’ve played both games, and my freidns have beaten them both. SoC is very pretty, and it’s a bit challenging. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really have any replay value. You’ll probably really enjoy it for a week and a half, and then wonder if you’ll ever play it again.
X-Men Legends II is almost exactly like X-Men Legends 1, but with some imporvements, such as more mutant powers to chose from, and a wider list of playable characters. The only time XMLII is weak compared to its predecessor is that in the first game, it was much easier to combo (hit the computer with two or more mutant powers from different characters) at the same time than it is now. A lot of the “evil” mutants are now playable, including Magneto and Juggernaut. That’s a selling point by itself.
Lev, you have to get Shadow of the Colossus or Ico.
It’s true. The replay value on Shadow is somewhat low. There are timed battles against the colossi after you beat it once that will get you different items to make the battles easier if you want, but getting through the first time is challenge and fun enough. I haven’t seen a game as flat out stunning as Colossus ever, and the single mindedness of the game is a huge selling point. It’s nice not to get stomped by a boss and having to go level up more to beat it.
If you want a longer gaming experience, go with Ico. It’s not as good looking as Colossus, but it’s still amazing in terms of the environment. It’s challenging without being overwhelming.
If you want something really different, I’d go with Fatal Frame 3. Good spooky survival horror. The controls are solid. The graphics are solid. The atmosphere is top notch with the environment and the sound/music combining to make the game creepy as all heck. I know it wasn’t on your list, but it’s a great game.
As for the X-Men, meh. It’s a good step as far as the X-men games go, but it’s still just not a truly great game.
My buddies and I play X-Men, and I’m wondering if any of these other games you’re all talking about are multiplayer? (There are four of us.)
X-Men is definitely improved in all the ways you’d want, but in the end it’s basically the same game. Which for us was ideal.
