Games like Heavy Weapon

I really like Popcap’s Heavy Weapon game, and I’m looking for similar games available online. Specifically, side-scrollers with reasonable graphics and the ability to gain new weapons to shoot down waves of enemies. Any suggestions?

It’s a (free) download, rather than online, and top-down, but Tyrian is the classic for the genre.

There exists a plot, which you don’t need to pay attention to- it never actively interferes with gameplay. It mostly explains “why did I go from fire to ice to fire again,” “how the heck did I get that ship/weapon?” and “Didn’t I kill him before?” but it’s still deep enough to get intriguing.

And, there’s weapons galore.

And combos!! Like those in Street Fighters or King of Fighters. And secret stages! And a wicked soundtrack!!

Seems fun! Two quick questions:

  1. is there any way for me to get the sound working on this?
  2. Is this a legal site? I’m specifically looking for games I’m allowed to download for free, and i’d prefer to stay on the mods’ good side, but I’m not sure how to find out whether this game has been approved for distribution by this site.

Try VDMSound Emulator. It usually gets the sound to work in these old games.

You’re allowed to download Tyrian 2000 for free as of 2004. As for the rest of the site’s content: no comment.

All I can say is that the site genuinely believes that all its content is legal. The stuff it doesn’t think is free, it links to the producer’s website (or in the case of antiques, an E-bay like place) so that you can buy the CD.

There’re probably a handful of cases here or there that they slipped up, but I can’t figure on any particular one.
