Gaming Mouse - what do you use?

There is also the Corsair M90. Not that you want a lot of buttons on a mouse since it’s hard to move your mouse effectively if you’re trying to push a button on the side (even on five-button mouses). Not that that matters in an MMO, I guess.

Another user of the Logitech MX518.

I have an MX Revolution that does that and the solution involvestaking apart the mouse, detaching the tiny little brass springplate, manually bending it back into shape (light pressure, it’s thin and delicate) and reassembling the mess. I wind up doing it about every eight months or so. Often enough to be kind of a pain but not so often that I get comfortable doing it.

I’m a little jealous you’d just have to put some cleaner on a contact sensor!

(Less so if you have to resolder it…)

Another MX518 here. If you include the previous similar models, I’ve gone through three or four of the things over the years and every time, I shop around to see what other choices there are, and every time, I’m disgusted by how terribly designed every other so-called gaming mouse is. Too few buttons, buttons in useless and awkward positions, a shape that requires holding on to a hard edge, it’s just dismal.

What’s with this sensor revision stuff?

A year two ago they replaced the original 1600 DPI sensor in the MX518 with a 2000 DPI sensor, which, while nominally better, is actually worse at the extremes of performance (like 6"+ per second of movement territory) from what I understand. The old sensor was godly and performed perfectly at the extremes, and was possibly the best sensor available to mice, and the new one just moves into “very good” territory. Most people won’t notice the difference but super pro gamers might.

Yeah, it makes control of the mouse a little uneven, and yeah, it doesn’t matter too much for an MMO where simultaneous action and mouse movement is rarer. I don’t try to use the buttons for FPSes and stuff.

Cyborg R.A.T.9

Yeah, it doesn’t track at high speeds well anymore. If you do the low sensitivity plus high elbow speed method of gameplay, it’s going to freak out. It’s lift off distance is higher too, which usually gives you a bit of jitter when you reset your position. It may sound like nothing, but it takes away the only advantage of buying it. Now you should just buy a better mouse, like the Xai/Sensei with their giant glides, or a Deathadder/Abyssus with their perfect sensors. Not to mention the downsides the MX518 has always had, like trouble with very fine movements, accidentally changing sensitivity 'cause of the top buttons, and its grip coating/paint wearing off.

Also, it’s $90 on Amazon, which is crazy. It’s latest revision (the G400) is a third of that and probably a better mouse.

Just watch out for the wireless version of the G400 - the G700. It comes with an eneloop battery and even with no gaming, it only lasts about a day between charges. You can charge and play at the same time with the USB cable though - well, one of the 2 it comes with.

I use high voltage (1.7v+) recharable batteries with it and get about 2 days. Most mice won’t use the high voltage batteries but the G700 doesn’t mind.

I got my MX518 about a year ago from Newegg for $40, though currently it’s out of stock there.

Amazon today is selling it for $80.

I’ll throw in a digressing vote and note that I use the MS Sidewinder X8. Not too many buttons for me, uses the bluetrack which is more forgiving of weird surfaces, and has a nice weight in my hand. The battery is a bit odd though, the last one I had quit charging or running altogether (even when using a clean battery) after maybe a year and half.

I also have a G13 gamepad, but I found that I disliked having to move my hands to the keyboard to type a comment to people ingame. For gameplay itself though, it seemed to work well in conjunction with a mouse, although it’s collecting dust now.

I managed to try out a few mice at the weekend and have decided to go for the ROCCAT Kova+ ROC-11-520 Max Performance Gaming Mouse which has an extra 7 buttons which is enough. The Naga didn’t sit well in my hand and I’d rather keep using the keyboard for most of my abilities while keeping the mouse for shift, ctrl and alt.

First thing to do - turn the lights off, quite why they are considered a good idea is beyond me, it’s an input device not an ornament.

I’ve been using a G13 for WoW, and I love it. I had been using a Belkin Nostromo pad, which was great for FPS, but was lacking in buttons for WoW. My brother-in-law gave me the G13, which I’d at first viewed as overkill, but now I can’t do without it.

It helps that I’m more of a solo player and don’t type a whole lot - I don’t mind moving to the keyboard occasionally.
