Thank goodness, I wasn’t alone in thinking that.
Nope, “nananana” is from “Hey Goodbye” by Steam.
I wonder if you lot across the sea are aware just how monumentally huge Gary Glitter was in the UK in his heyday.
My Guinness Book of British Hit Singles (11th ed.) lists his eleven consecutive Top Ten singles:
June 72 Rock and Roll (Parts 1 & 2) No. 2 (15 weeks in chart)
Sept 72 I Didn’t Know I Loved You (Till I Saw You Rock ‘n’ Roll) No. 4 (11 weeks in chart)
Jan 73 Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah) No. 2 (11 weeks in chart)
April 73 Hello Hello I’m Back Again No. 2 (14 weeks in chart)
July 73 I’m the Leader of the Gang (I Am) No. 1 (12 weeks in chart)
Nov 73 I Love You Love Me Love No. 1 (14 weeks in chart)
Mar 74 Remember Me This way No. 3 (8 weeks in chart)
Jun 74 Always Yours No. 1 (9 weeks in chart)
Nov 74 Oh Yes! You’re Beautiful No. 2 (10 weeks in chart)
May 75 Love Like You and Me No. 10 (6 weeks in chart)
May 75 Doing All Right With The Boys No. 6 (7 weeks in chart)
His chart power declined somewhat after that and he didn’t have another top 10 until December 84 with Another Rock And Roll Christmas, which reached no. 7.
His backing Glitter Band (who later had 6 Top Ten singles of their own) was the first I ever saw that employed two drummers.
Latterly, he was something of a parody of himself (i.e. a parody of a parody, if such a thing is possible) and spent his time touring universities and suchlike. His Christmas shows were legendary.
And now look at him.
Yes, one story certainly does add a lot of data to the debate. And wait, by extrapolation you have understood a societal problem puzzled over for centuries - how can society ever thank you?
Or maybe this is just one case where a seemingly unrepentant paedophile has gone abroad to try to satisfy his lust…
Thanks for the laugh, though now I’ll have that in my head all day.
I nominate deevee for the allilerative title of the week. “Doo-dah! Doodah!”
And benefitted Joan Jett amazingly.
She’s on record (I read it in Creem magazine all those years ago) as saying that ‘I Love Rock and Roll’ began as a re-write of Rock an d Roll Part 2. And she had popular songs with ‘Do You Wanna Touch Me’ and ‘I Love You Love Me Love’.
I suspected that the aging rock-n-roll dude in Love, Actually was something of a send up of Gary Glitter. Does this have any merit?
I don’t know, but that is exactly what I thought when I saw the synopsis of his career.
I’m so glad that GG is now unplayable due to his scandal, as it means I don’t have to tolerate his tunes on shopping centre PAs over the Xmas period. Can anyone dig up some dirt on Slade, too? My ears will love you forever.
Except that the actual evidence says they’re not. But hey, other than that you make a great point  .
I don’t get it. What does “Gary Glitter” rhyme with?
Strike “Gl”, add “Sh”.
baby sitter?
Ah. I was trying to think what rhymed with Gary (but I happened on a very interesting sodomy web site when I tried looking it up so nothing is lost )
He might end up in front of a firing squad.
Actually, Joan Jett didn’t write “I Love Rock and Roll.” It’s a cover of a song by the band The Arrows.
It has just occurred to me that we ought to have had some clue about his proclivities from the song titles, for example “Do You Wanna Touch Me?” and “Doing All Right With The Boys”.
Yes, Gary, we’ll “Remember [You] This Way”.
Not for sexual offenses, no, but they are higher than the norm if any reoffense is counted.
