It really isn’t variety tho. It’s depressingly similar, time after time after time after time.
And you are AWFULLY invested in defending this ground where even the original poster (who is the one usually making stupid jokes in threads anyway) apologized and moved on.
So here’s a quick question, that only needs a yes or no.
Is freedom of speech more important to you than having a “variety” of posters around to form a community?
Speaking only for myself, yes. Few things irritate me more than po-faced pearl-clutchers flouncing around in a state of high dudgeon over tame, stupid jokes. Those people need to grow some fucking balls.
Possibly worth noting in regards to this that there are two issues that frequently get conflated.
The first is personal remarks of the sort being discussed here. The second is disagreement over issues. And I get the impression (based on comments posted to the MB) that the second is a bigger problem for many people than the first. There are many who have expressed their “disgust at the misogyny” of threads in which people disagree with them about issues relating to how to deal with people accused of rape, or the like.
My own feeling is that people who can’t deal with opposing positions on hot-button issues are better off leaving the board or at least avoiding such threads. But in any event, my main point here is that it’s worth differentiating between people who can’t deal with offensive jokes and the like and people who can’t deal with people who disagree with them about hot-button issues.
I just have to say that lots of thing irritate me more than “po-faced pearl-clutchers flouncing around in a state of high dudgeon over tame, stupid jokes”. Incessant rules lawyering, for one thing. In any event, I salute you for not having anything more serious to be irritated about.
Can’t work up much sympathy for your particular state of high dudgeon, however. If Gatopescado’s banal, crappy tit joke would be considered inappropriate for a serious public conversation among people physically present, and I believe most people would agree that it is, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be equally inappropriate in the context of the same serious conversation on this board.
Now, could all we please get back to what we do best: pissing on Trump?
Responses like this are exactly what are making the internet a hostile place for women in particular—if you can’t handle it then leave or stay in your walled garden. It is driving women offline, and essentially silencing a range of voices.
Tell me, is there a trendy bandwagon you *haven’t *jumped upon in the last 5 years blaring “I’m here” through a megaphone.
If you cannot differentiate between what passes for intense debate on this forum and some of the tricks pulled by trolls and their actual criminal misconduct then I cannot help.
I was. My last post wasn’t aimed exclusively at you.
Really? Disgusted? You don’t think that’s a slightly hyperbolic response? Peeved, I could maybe understand. Irritated, sure. But disgusted? Could it be that the problem is less the posts in this thread than your low threshold for what constitutes a “disgusting” post? I’d be genuinely fascinated to know which posts you found disgusting and why.
Look, this could well be one of those cases where everyone is just awful and needs a smack upside the head. If the people objecting to the decision to warn Gatopescado over his lame-assed little joke need a slap, then so do the people ostentatiously going out of their way to signal to the world how shocked (‘Shocked, I say. Shocked!’) they are at the alleged misogyny of the objectors.
I am forbearing from giving warnings for some of the comments in this thread. But I am closing it. ATMB is for discussions of moderator actions and other things pertinent to the SDMB, not for personal cracks.
