I was just out to lunch, with my purse on the seat of my car next to me. When I returned to the office, I grabbed my purse and got out of the car. Then I realized I’d left my phone in there, and reopened the car to lean in and get it, switching my purse from one hand to the other and jostling everything inside. Then I heard a sound like a match striking, and smoke poured out of my purse.
It is so hot out, a pack of matches combusted without striking (although I’m betting there was at least a little friction to start it off). What the hell is that???
98 degrees here in Philadelphia, and I’m stuck in an office with no air conditioning. My poor husband had to take some clients to the Bronx Zoo yesterday. He was outside the entire time and said it was miserable. All the outdoor activities we had planned for the neighborhood kids at work this week had to be cancelled.
The heat just makes everything worse. Everyone becomes more cranky and confused. And in this part of town, it makes people more violent.
I’m drinking a lot of water to stay hydrated.
I’m just so hot and I’m all alone in this office. I think I’m going to cut out of here early just to get some relief from the heat.
Small beer compared to some of the temperatures you Americans are posting about, but the car thermometer displayed 33c here in Scotland today. It’s likely not very accurate, but the previous high I’ve seen is 28c.
The Bronx Zoo in the heat. Ouch. Some of the exhibits are indoors but many aren’t. It’s also so large you can easily spend a lot of time walking.
I work at home so I’m free to set my own temps. We only have two air conditioners. One is in my bedroom and one is downstairs in the blocked separate office and bedroom off the main part of the house. The cats finally got smart and forsook the rest of the house (even the basement) for the back rooms.
I took a brief walk today in the heat in the afternoon and thought I’d collapse ten minutes later. I had to go put the a/c on high just to feel like I could breathe again. Luckily the heat is supposed to break by Sunday.
Yeah, and to add to that, his clients are kids with severe behavioral difficulties. As you can imagine, they were super well-behaved on the hottest day of the year. I’m amazed the trip wasn’t cancelled; they had ordered tickets ahead of time, but still. He pretty much came home and went straight to bed.
Oh brutal. I do love the Bronx Zoo, but it needs to be visited on a crisp spring or fall day. Serious hills, much walking. Some cover from the sun but not much on the walk ways.
Missed the edit window. Okay, so after venturing out multiple times and doing a fair bit of walking around as well as driving, I decided that even though I am no more than a 2-5 minute walk from Greek, Thai, Italian, Japanese, Irish Pub fare, Pizza, Chinese, Cajun, Mexican and Frozen Yogurt food establishments, I couldn’t bear going out again. The thermometer in the kitchen stands at a desultory 90º f.
So I poked in the freezer. And am about to tuck into a blazingly hot bowl of spaghetti with sauce and meatballs.
I almost had frozen bananas and spoonfuls of very cold peanut butter for dinner. Which is in fact a catch-all snack I adore. My Dearly Beloved™ talked me into something a bit more…dinner-like.
