What’s “[I’ve heard the] Mermaids Singing” about

Sheila McCarthy plays Polly, a gauche and incompetent secretary who has a secret passion for photography and a rich fantasy life. When she gets a job at an art gallery, she develops a crush on the sophisticated female owner, sends the photographs to her under a pseudonym and … various misunderstandings ensue. See the IMDB entry here .

It’s about a young woman who temps at an art gallery and enjoys taking photographs. She develops a crush on the (female) gallery owner and anonymously submits some of her own work to the gallery. In the meantime, she snoops around and finds some paintings in the gallery owner’s apartment and puts one up at the gallery to great public and critical acclaim. There’s a girlfriend for the gallery owner as well, and beautifully shot fantasy sequences. More I won’t say as it would completely spoil the movie, but I definitely recommend the film to everyone.

Another one I’d recommend is “It’s in the Water.” It’s a romantic comedy set in a small Texas town that goes nuts over the rumor that the water turns people gay. It’s hard to go into too much without spoiling it but check it out.

“The Sum Of Us” with a young, “gay” Russel Crowe.
An old (70’s) classic German gay comedy film, “Taxi Zum Klo” - although I don’t know how it holds up after all these years.

Beautiful Thing
Ma Vie En Rose
Both a little serious, but they’re worth it. I had the chance to see them both at our Uni’s LGBT film festival.
