I recently saw the movie TRICK for the first time and would recommend it to anybody, gay or straight, who wanted a cute romantic comedy. (If this were a just world, Coco Peru would have been lauded with awards for her brief appearance in that movie.)
Can anybody recommend some other light romantic movies with either a gay theme or at least a gay subplot?
A few that I would recommend to anybody, gay or straight:
Kissing Jessica Stein Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss Kiss Me, Guido
and one of my favorite movies, which more people should see
Big Eden
I was thinking about this very subject last night, when I went to see Far From Heaven and was surprised at the large percentage of gay couples in the audience. Then I realized that the film does have a major gay subplot. Far From Heaven is by no means a light romantic comedy, but it is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time, as well as the most beautiful, and I highly recommend it.
Check out “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” – The plot is trivial, but Jane Russell’s song & dance number with the Men’s Olympic Gymnastic Team is just about the “gayest” movie scene ever. Not to mention the movie has Marilyn Monroe singing “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.” Madonna’s entire career is a pale shadow of THAT scene.
Also worth seeing is “Edge of Seventeen” – IMHO, it is the best “coming out” flick done yet.
“Boys’ Life” is a collection of three short (and ultra-low budget) flicks that are also interesting and “gay date”-worthy.
Anyone who has not seen All Over the Guy must go out and rent it now. Get Real, Broken Hearts Club, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and, of course, The Birdcage and In & Out (if you want to get predictable) are all fabulous as well. All Over the Guy, though, is just wonderful. Love! Valour! Compassion! is ok if you can stomach Jason Alexander as the stereotypical flamer, and worth it to see Jeremy Irons play gay twins.
French Twist ~ a very cute story involving a French housewife, her cheating husband, and the wife’s new lesbian lover. It doesn’t go the path you think it might, thus living up to the title of the flick. You can find it in the Foreign Film section.
Bedrooms & Hallways, in addition to “me, too” on Trick, Broken Hearts Club, and, especially All Over the Guy.
Other “must-see” movies mentioned above that I don’t think fit “light, romantic comedy” are Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I find these two too thought-provoking to count as “light”. I’d recommend Relax … It’s Just Sex in that vein also.
Better than Chocolate is a great one for the ladies.
I really enjoyed Trick too. There’s another movie I watched around the same time I saw Trick that would fit into the “Great Gay Date” category, but I’ll be damned if I can remember it now…I’ll let you know if I recall it…
Other “must-see” movies mentioned above that I don’t think fit “light, romantic comedy” are Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
OK, it has darker thought-provoking elements, but I thought it qualified for being altogether positive in its portrayal and outcome. The Mermaids Singing likewise, although it’s primarily about coming out as an artist. But definitely not Mr Ripley, given where it ultimately leads.
I haven’t seen BIG EDEN, but I’ve heard two or three people say “It’s not the greatest movie on Earth, but it’s the way things ought to be”. Evidently, the gay characters are just totally normal in the community. I’ll have to watch that.
:smack: Sorry for the double-post. The hampsters were going slowly, and I had to bitch-slap the Internet before it worked right. My deepest and most sincere apologies. bows deeply before the veteran posters surrounding her
