Gay men and straight woman dress flashier to attrach men?

After watching Queer Eye for the Straigh Guy for the first time the other day my friend and I had a discussion about why gay men are known for dressing better than straight men.* The theory we came up with why gay men would dress better or flashier is because they are trying to attrach men who are more visually motivated in attraction. This would explain why straight women and gay men dress better than straight men and lesbian women.
Now, for this theory to have any chance of being correct we would have to establish that gay men and straight woman really to dress flashier and that men are more visually motivated in attration. So, is there anything to this theory?

  • We couldn’t decide if gay men (and straight woman) dressed better or flashier.

…I’m still trying to get past this basic assumption:

You got any kind of…cite…for that? That straight women are all snappy dressers and lesbians are all frumps?

Or do you just spot a frump and say, “Ah ha! She must be a lesbian!”

No, for this theory to have any chance of being correct, you would first have to establish that gay men and straight women really dress flashier than straight men and gay women.

Then you can start worrying about establishing whether men are more visually motivated than women.

Sure, men are easily attracted to shiny objects, everyone knows that!

Perpetuating stereotypes aside…
