I swear that it seems like there is NOBODY in a position of power on either side who is willing to look at the situation like an adult. Instead, we have petulant brats who are unwilling to make the slightest compromise./QUOTE]
Wait…isn’t giving up a sizeable portion of land, expelling families from their homes in the process, a slight compromise?
You seem a little pessemistic about the situation.
Oh, my apologies for not checking this thread before now, I’m looking for a source for palestinian civillian deaths at the moment. I have a figure for Israeli but I don’t want to present one without the other.
[Pat Robertson] I didn’t say assasinate! [/pr]
One thing that is really bugging me about the pullout is that Hamas and the other extremists are using it as a PR coup whil Abbas doesn’t appear to be doing much to sway opinion into his camp. There is a whole hell of a lot riding on how Abbas comes out of this. And that isn’t anything we’ll know anytime soon.
Thank you, TwistofFate and Sal Ammoniac. The links you posted only provide details for the last 5 years, the period commonly known as “The 2nd Intifada.” Though they clearly show that Israel has, indeed, killed more Palestinians than vice versa in that period, they fall well short of proving your original assertion.
You do realize that Hamas has been killing innocent civilians since 1987, and that some of “the other groups” have been doing so for decades longer, right?
Oh, go fuck yourself in the ass with a chainsaw. What I wrote is right there for the world to see, and I stand behind it. If you’re so bloody sensitive that the comment “The Teeming Millions in general” is taken as some type of a personal insult or attack, you seriously need to get a sense of perspective and should probably stop reading the internet altogether because it’s not going to be very good for your blood pressure.
So which is it? you stand behind it or it was sarcastic and laced with hyperbole? Commonly “I stand by my statement” is the equivalent of “I meant what I said”, right? which is pretty much the opposite of stating something sarcastically and laced w/hyperbole.
well more accurately, I took the original quote (
)as unsupportable.
Would I agree that a large segment of the SDMB would be safely characterized as being somewhat supportive of the Palestinians? sure. But that’s not what you said. and claim here to ‘stand by’. There seems to be damn few that don’t see a certain amount of ‘wrongfulness’ on both sides of the issue.
If you “stand by” (as in believe) that “the Teeming Millions in general” (realizing that there’s about 3500 subscribed members) “are of the opinion that Palesitnians are pure and innocent and good”, than certainly you’ll be able to substantiate that. Notice that your claim was not “generally supportive” of, but “Palestinians are pure etc etc”.
However, if, as I would suspect, that your statement was a gross oversimplification, exaggerating the position to an absurd degree, then we get to ask: why?
Intentionally grossly mischaracterizing ‘the other sides’ position is generally considered to be an ‘assholish’ thing to do. and yet, there it was, the 3rd post of the thread.
and when others respond in kind you claim that you only respond rudely in response to others.
you gave mhendo shit for saying “a bunch of people” claiming (erroneously as it turns out) that the ‘bunch’ was only he and jayjay, yet here you are still ‘standing by’ an obviously unsupportable piece of bullshit. if you feel, still that it’s supportable, please start making the case that “generally” the roughly 3500 paid subscribers here hold the ascribed position.
Or you could admit that you shot off your ass in that first post.
So, I can’t stand behind a comment that is sarcastic and laced with hyperbole? That’s interesting to know. I don’t agree with it, mind you, but it’s interesting to know nonetheless. I shall be sure to submit ALL of my future comments to wring for guidance as to which ones I can stand behind and which ones I can not. Or maybe I won’t seeing as how this post is laced with sarcasm and hyperbole. Hmm, what a dilemma…
And BTW, you can feel free to dissect the accuracy of my post #3 all you want and debate that until the cows come home, that is, after all, what these boards are here for, but sadly, there is nothing in that post that is even mildly insulting, which is the offense I have been accused of. “Yea, well, you started it” is a remarkably juvenile debating “tactic”, but it seems to be all that mhendo and other have got. Sadly, my very post refutes these accusations because as we both noted, the words exist in print for all to see. Even mhendo, in his most recent screed in this thread, accuses my of being insulting in post #3, yet all of the examples he gives come from other posts in the thread when I was responding to other posters. Then he declines to discuss the actual issue at hand. “You started it” followed by “Now I’m gonna take my ball and go home”. I’m breathless awaiting what he’ll pull out of his ass to hit the playground trifecta.
The examples i gave in my last post were of other dopers responding to you, and especially to your first post in this thread.
When wring said:
he was criticizing you for being a hypocrite, for engaging (in your first post) in the same sort of unreflective crap of which you were accusing others.
When Merijeek said:
he specifically quoted your first post.
And when El Kabong said:
he, too, was specifically responding to post #3, your first post in this thread.
NurseCarmen’s Pat Robertson reference is looking more and more appropriate by the minute.
No, you can’t. That’s totally contrary to the concepts of sarcasm and hyperbole. Observe:
“Jews delight in murdering children.”
Take your pick-- this is:
A) Sarcasm. (ie; I am saying something that is clearly false, in order to lampoon the people who hold such attitudes.)
B) Hyperbole. (ie; It’s not meant literally, but rather an extreme exaggeration of something believed to be true.)
C) A statement that I stand behind. (ie; I’m a fucking moron who talks out of his ass in order to make prejudicial statements without any regard for the truth of the matter.)
I stand behind what I wrote as a sarcastic statement. Really, spending all of this time and effort on a semantic nitpick is a waste of time, unless you’re a moron in which case I’m sure it’s massively entertaining. Enjoy your wank fest, if the thread wanders back on topic, I might have a desire to contribute to it again. If not-nice job of hijacking it off topic.
