Is there any update on what exactly happened?
Absolutely nothing concrete that I’ve been able to find. As you said, there was the usual gutter speculation (must be gay as he wasn’t found with 20 dead hookers etc).
Although the inner me does wonder whether this has been D-Noticed*, or whether there’s just no developments and it was entirely unrelated to his job.

The recent article I read ruled out the “kinky sex gone wrong” theory, as he was (IIRC) naked in a bag. No restraints, fetish clothes, etc. Would his sex partner have spent time undressing a corpse before running? I think the theory was that someone not that knowledgeable about kink tried to make a murder look like it was sex gone wrong.
I would imagine that if you’re in a bag you don’t need any extra restraints, He had a history of it, and theres even a name for that particular kink, though I can’t remember it.

Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World is about Antarctica and the people who work there. One part shows the regular Talent Night, and one lady’s talent was to fit herself into a bag about the size of the one in question for the spy.
