My GE washing machine won’t drain and I’m looking for some tips. I checked the drain hose (not clogged) and I took the pump out and see nothing visibly wrong with it. There was some sand in it. Should I go ahead and replace the pump or is there something else I should look at before doing that?
when my Maytag did that it was a broken switch. The switch is in the body of the washer an a plastic pin on the lid activates it. was easy to fix. something to check
Before replacing the pump you need to see if it’s getting power.
If it’s getting power and and not running, replace it.
If it’s running and not pumping, it could go either way, but it’s probably the pump based on what you’ve said…maybe.
If it’s not getting power, the pump is probably fine and there’s an electrical issue. Could be the timer, a switch, something with the wiring etc.
So, do you have a multimeter or voltage tester?

Thanks, I will borrow one from my brother and check it out.
Thanks, will look into that. Hoping to save by not calling the repair man.
So I checked the pump and it works. I checked the electrical and it’s fine. But it could be possible that the pump isn’t working properly? Any ideas on what I should do next?
What do you mean by these statements? That is, if you checked the pump and it works and you checked the electrical and it’s fine, I’d like to know what you did. I’m guessing you mean that it’s getting power when it should be and the pump is spinning up, right?
It’s possible the pump it self is not working, yes. How did you get water out of the tub when it stopped working? You said you checked the drain hose and it was clear, I’ll take your word for that. The next think I’d look into is the drain from the tub to the pump. Make sure that’s not clogged up. Honestly, without seeing it for myself, I can’t tell you for sure how to do that.
I don’t know if you can just see it from underneath, or if you can take the pump off and dump some water in and see if it pours back out the bottom. If nothing comes out, there may be something clogging up that passage way. A collapsed hose, a blocked filter (do any of them have filters, I don’t know). But it’s worth checking as long as you have it stripped down that far.
Here’s video showing how to open one up, clear it of a bunch of debris and put it back together in about 2 minutes.
I took the drainage hose off the back of the washer, the hose from the pump to the drainage hose off, and checked the hose from the barrel to the pump. All are clear. I took the pump apart and checked to see if anything was caught inside or if the propellers were broke, but that was clear also. I put the washing machine on the drain cycle to see if the pump spins (it does). I’m checking the lid switch next.
Thanks for your input.
So, what was happening to prompt you to start this thread? Was the pump energizing? Was it spinning but not pumping?
Honestly, it sounds like everything is working now. You might try letting it fill with a little bit of water and seeing if it pumps it back out. If it wasn’t spinning before, it’s possible all the playing with it that you’ve been doing fixed it. A loose connection, a bad winding, a safety switch that you bumped back into place, who knows.
My washing machine won’t drain. It spins fine.
I think I’m going to test the pump with water now. The switch seems to be fine.
This is my first time trying any appliance repair so I’m learning as I go.
