Well, Gears of War 2 is out today. Anyone picked it up?
I am on the fence about this one. I loved the original one but I think it only clocked in at a few hours of play for the storyline mode. I never did like the online play. I could have saved a few bucks by just renting it instead of buying it. If GOW2 turns out to be substantially longer I will buy it but if not then it looks like a rental.
I haven’t finished the first one either. I played for a while and thought it was fantastic and great fun (with an incredible world), but then all of a sudden it got ridiculously difficult in a hurry. I keep meaning to go back to it. This is a pretty good excuse.
Honestly, if you get one friend to help you through the story mode, the game becomes dramatically easier.
The AI for your allies is incredibly incompetent. I don’t know how many times Dominic Santiago got himself permanently killed. Especially in that first fight vs. the Beserker. And then the time he stepped into the dark and the Krill got him.
My girlfriend’s roommate had played it when it first came out, and then when my girlfriend got it, (probably about 6 months or so after it’s release, and about 3 months after they started rooming together) after getting really frustrated with Dom’s incompetence, he took up the second player controller. It makes playing the storyline part dramatically less frustrating.
I got this for christmas and just beat it. Great game. The presentation cannot be beat. It just can’t. The final chapter is fantastic though some reviews have bashed it because you don’t fight a “final boss proper” so to speak.
I’m not a FPS guy and suck at online but I really liked the first GOW so I had to have this one. Well worth it.
I won’t spoil anything here but make damn sure you watch all the way past the credits. There is a MAJOR plot point that you will miss if you don’t.
Wow. Is this the only thread on GoW2 or did I miss a bigger one that died down shortly after the game came out. I can’t believe this is all there ois o this.
No, there was one other thread but it only received a couple of responses also. The past few months have been filled with a ton of great games so I can see why this one may have been looked over. But this game is great. I beat it a few weeks ago and have now started to play online and have yet to tire of it.
It wasn’t a stretch to predict that that game would be popular here. It’s a post-apocalyptic role-playing game. I’d like to pick it up, too, but its popularity here isn’t surprising.
Is GoW 2 the same kind of “shooter on rails” as the original GoW? If it is, I think I’ll pass. I prefer the more open sandbox style of FarCry 2, Fallout 3 and GTA 4.
It was ok. Kind of like Bioshock or the original Farcry. It’s a fun game and they create a pretty cool world and story to go along with it. But it ends up being pretty linear. I would love a sandbox style game in the Gears word. You know, just spend an afternoon chainsawing Locust.
