And holy shit is it f’n badass! The graphics are as good or better than uncharted 2 and you will be hard pressed to find a game that has tighter controls than this one. The opening sequence is amazing and the first boss fight is incredible. The titans all look insane as hell and you actually fight ON them at times. I’m still only in th first section after the intro so I don’t know much more about it right now.
Oh one cool thing is that the bow and arrow you get in this game doesn’t use magic for ammo. It has it’s own meter that recharges quickly.
If you have a PS3 THIS is the game you bought it for even if you don know it yet.
meh, honestly the GOW games have always been pretty good, but not really my thing. Plus I absolutely hate that everyone calls similar games “GOW clones” when God of War is a clone of the Devil May Cry-type hack&slash gameplay, which was released nearly 4 years earlier than the first GOW. So yea…
I’m playing.
Love this series of games and this one is looking **very **good so far.
One complaint–why the hell can’t I control my camera view? Every type of game like this I’ve played you can look around in first person, usually using the right toggle. Not here. Every time I try to look around I end up diddybopping off the edge of a cliff. It’s frustrating.
I’ve got it in my pocket and have 38 minutes left to go before I finish work. Then a quick cycle, get some eats in and then crack open a can of guinness and get my game on. Looks great. Really looking forward to it.
Outside of a few specific posters I’ve often been tempted to think there’s something of an anti-console bias on the board, but those arguments, (PC vs. Console) tend to blow up to an extent that’s not atypical in general. I’m a tad surprised that one of the biggest releases of the year hasn’t garnered more attention, but it just came out so I’m willing to allow a little slack at the moment.
I picked the game up on Tuesday and just finished my first play through and I have to say that I liked it. I wasn’t thrilled with some of the decisions that were made. Most of the secondary weapons are too similar to the chain blades for my liking and Kratos has underwent something of character evolution… not necessarily for the better.
But I liked it… In hindsight it’s a fitting end for the Ghost of Sparta’s saga and it really couldn’t have ended any other way. If Sony want’s to continue the franchise I’ll be interested in seeing how they progress.
I’m into other stuff*, but there’s only so many things I can get at once. God Of War, while it looks like something I would like, is a series I never played (I only had a 'Cube last generation). I know they released the collection with it, but I had Pokemon SoulSilver on reserve, and had just played Indigo Prophecy so I was sort of ready to get Heavy Rain about a day after the GoW3 release. I’ll probably pick it up in a month or so, assuming school doesn’t become too hectic.
I’ll bump the thread and comment when I play it, cross my heart.
'Cept Halo, mostly because I prefer the Quake/Unreal style FPS games to the branch that Halo spawned. Also, again, I never had an XBox so my entire experience with the game was playing Blood Gulch multi on the demo until my eyes gave out in the computer lab at school. I’d probably enjoy the campaign from what I’ve heard, but I’m rather anal about playing games in a series in order.
Heh, sorry. I got the first GOW based on the massive acclaim but only played it for about 2 hours.
I certainly agree it’s a great game, but it just isn’t for me. Console third-person action game - just doesn’t hold my attention. Everything about the game was very cool; I just didn’t ever feel like playing it.
…so you can understand why I’m not playing GOW3 (nor even 2)
That’s certainly true. Maybe as time passes though we’ll see more people sharing their opinions. The game is good, but not without flaws and I’m interested in seeing others takes on it.
Tell me about it! I still haven’t played AC2 or Uncharted 2 and both of those are on my list right now. I also want to pick up the expansion for Dragon Age and haven’t done that yet either. And FF13 is sitting on my shelf with about 8 or 9 hours logged so far and it’s about to get picked up again… So many games, so little time, (and funds!).
Heavy Rain is a great experience, and I highly recommend it, especially if you liked Indigo Prophecy. I understand it sold pretty well it’s first week, but I’m not sure how it’s done since then. I suspect it may enter ‘niche’ status at some point as it’s a pretty unique game.
If you can play the first two GOW games before playing 3 I would recommend that also. The three games really do build on each other plot wise and the third game kind of assumes familiarity with the story. This may only be my own opinion but the Kratos who exists in the third game is very different from the one who appears in the beginning of the first. He grows somewhat, but it makes a certain kind of sense.
Fair enough.
Certain genres just don’t work for some people, and that’s understandable. I love this series with a passion, but if you couldn’t get into it in a couple of hours in the first game I’d say give it a miss. It hasn’t really changed much since then.
I’m still on my first playthrough. I only play when my son can watch as he loves this game but doesn’t have the coord to play it really.
When I beat it I’ll post back. So far so good though. I agree Kratos has changed somewhat. There is much more raw anger and hatred in his personality here.
I got a question for those of you who have it and have played number two as well. How bad are the platform puzzles in these two games? God of War was horrible simply because of all the jumping puzzles. Especially with the bad habit th camera had of turning mid-jump. I hated the game for it and never tried two.
However, I heard once that GoW 2 wasn’t so heavy handed with the jumping puzzles and was wondering if that was true about three as well. I liked the story and the combat of GoW 1, what little of it there seemed to be. I just kept getting stuck on the stupid jumping puzzles.
So, are they gone? Are GoW 2 and 3 more fighting games then platform jumping puzzles? Or will I still tear my hair out because I’ve died for the tenth time from falling in a hole that you couldn’t see until the camera turned 90 degrees while you were mid-air?
GOW 1 had some really tough sections (anything with rolling blades, jumping), though the puzzles were all fairly easy.
GOW 2 had barely any blade/jumping sections, though there were a few.
I’m 75% through 3 and there have been none so far.
Be aware though that there is a (bad) glitch with the game that is pretty infuriating. Basically R1, which is used to open chest an move objects, is gltching so that he keeps letting go of things while you are holding the button, so in effect he grabs, releases, grabs releases, etc… It can be maddening. The only fix right now seems to be to plug the controller into the PS3 while playing. This worked for me and eliminated the problem. They need to patch the game though ASAP to fix this. It also effects the double jump, as on more than one occasion I’ve been jumping over a pit and go to double jump and the second button press doesnt register.
Jumping puzzles have been toned way down over the course of the series. They seemed to be practically non existent in the third, replaced with lots of wall/ceiling climbing and swinging around. That said, there were definitely a few key moments, especially near the end, where jumping is required and the camera isn’t too helpful. Generally it does a good job of pointing you in the right direction, but there were moments where I died simply because I wasn’t sure of which way to go.
Also, that R1 problem is annoying as hell. And it isn’t just interacting with chests and blocks either, when you find a savepoint you have to press the R1 button to interact with it, but the game has to register that you’re standing on it first or nothing happens. Every time I was trying to save my game I’d have to walk back and forth over the savepoint a half dozen times before I’d get the prompt to save.
