God of War III rant.

Mighty Kratos! Slayer of Gods! All of Greece fears your wrath!! You’ve ripped Cyclops’ eye from his socket and showered in his blood!! You have rended Helios’ head from his body and carry it around as a trophey!! You will, I do not doubt, slay the most powerful being in the world, Zeus himself!!!

But a ten foot gap? That sends you plummeting to your death. Over and over.

I rented God of War III as a brainless, gory way to blow a couple hours a night. If you can ignore the ridiculous abuse of mythology and the over the top violence, it’s a fun, if somewhat repetitive, game.

But the jump mechanics absolutely suck. They absolutely blow. They suck and blow so much they create a vacuum of frustration that will it threatens to odevour all fun from the game like a black hole of suckitude. Kratos can slay mighty Gods and defeat scores of gladiators, but because of the shitty jump mechanic, he can’t get over a minor gap. Never mind that in the cutscenes Kratos survives a plummet from Mount Olympus, that 20 foot drop in a small span of a bridge is fatal. It’s more frustrating that slaying your own wife and child.

I finally got to try this out on my friends ps3. and boy kratos a is a clunky mofo. having just come from Bayonetta where the jumping is so fluid, well i kinda died a lot on those jumps. brought back memories of that part where you have to jump from crate to crate in the first half-life.

As an aside, it also has one of the suckiest endings ever and features the stupidest protaganist I’ve seen.

So a real winner then, huh?

Edit: Not to derail, but I’m enjoying the hell out Bayonetta. It’s hilarious (possibly somewhat unintentionally) and the gameplay is rollicing fun. Sure it’s shiny, but most of the time, I barely have time to admire the scenery.

One of the highlights at PAX East a few weekends ago was the twin Bayonetta cosplayers. They were both at least six feet tall… and that’s not counting the six-inch spike heels.

Very impressive.

The swinging my weapons and slaughtering of creatures of myth is the brainless fun I signed up for, but everything else is pathetically sad. The jumping mechanic is broken, the flying scenes are memorize-the-path-each-time-you-die-so-you-can-go-a-bit-farther-next-time annoying, and the “plot”, “characters”, and “storytelling” are what you would expect if written by a 12 year old boy with ADHD and only 60 seconds of introduction into Greek mythology. And the “ending” isn’t an ending. It’s the typical “let’s leave it open for another sequel so we can run the franchise into the ground if there is a few dollars to be made”.

I read an interview with the maker and it sounds enjoyable. I’ll probably wait a bit because I’ve had my yearly fill of hack n’ slash, but I may give it a try.

Relevant Yatzee Croshaw review for GoW III.

Actually the game is great but you are experiencing a well known bug with the controls. For some reason double jump only responds like 3/4 of the time and will send you to your death. There is also a well known problem with R1 where he keeps grabbing and releasing chests and doors. It’s an issue with the wireless in the controllers. If you play with the controller plugged in the problems disappear immediately.

It’s my fav game series of all time but I was not thrilled with the ending at all either.

I’m loving GOW3 so far, but the jumping thing is irritating. The one time so far that the ruthless slaughter has me feeling bad is taking out Hephasteus. I really felt bad for the poor guy.

Man and i thought that i sucked in the jumping and the corridor (that Hamlet described). It ain’t meeeee!! (ok maybe a little bit) plus there are a lot of useless tame wasting chapters…

Funny is when you killed Gods in the first two titles, it didnt start global natural disasters. Also, Kratos draws his great power from his newly acquired eyeliner. Another thing, is Aphrodite just going to continue hanging out in her room being a bi-sexual whore forever? I was pretty disappointed with GoW3. Side note, Sixaxis controllers are notorious for de-syncing, however, DualShock3’s are flawless.

I don’t have a huge problem with that, since the gods that died in the first part didn’t represent nearly as fundamental natural concepts. There was Ares who was almost immediately replaced by Kratos in the first and Athena in the second.

The third were Helios, Poseidon and Hades that really brought the disasters. It makes sense since they represent the Sun, the ocean and death.

I thought about playing the GoW series, but I got turned off real quick (like, in the second stage of the first game) by the main character. I mean, wow, Kratos pretty much defines the concept of “bastard” in every possible way. I like the concept of the gameplay and how it’s done, but… wow. Nasty guy. I feel dirty just thinking about him.

That’s the point. He’s not supposed to be a good guy. He’s an evil protagonist that the developers somehow managed to make you sympathetic towards.

Isn’t playing a bad guy fun for you sometimes?

Actually, this is false. In the FIRST God of War game, he was out for vengeance because Ares tricked him into killing his own family, or some such nonsense, but it was a generally justified slaughter. (Inasmuch as such things can be.). In GoW2 and 3, he just kills **** because he’s an ***hole. Functionally, he’s not even really the same character.

No, not really.

Actually, you are incorrect. Even before he served Ares, Kratos was the youngest and most promising Spartan captain. He delighted in killing and wanted nothing else than to shed blood. He was always a bad guy, except around his family.

This is true. It’s been a few years, but I also seem to recall having to do some pretty nasty things in the first game. Didn’t you have to sacrifice a few poor defenseless bastards a couple of times for some reason or other? Kratos was never a good guy.

I still haven’t played GoW III. I’m looking forward to it even after having read this thread. I’m sure a patch will have fixed the double-jump issue by then anyway.

On another note, I haven’t posted on SDMB in about 3 million years and my first post is in a video game thread. For some reason, this worries me a bit.

Well, okay, he was at least VAGUELY SYMPATHETIC in the first game. :stuck_out_tongue: Attempts at that have subsequently been abandoned.

I think you’re supposed to like him more for his sheer badassery than anything else.

Definitely Anti-Hero.
Kratos reminds me of an even more violent Riddick.
