If you pay close attention to VW’s specs for the new Passat they mention that the headlights are “connected to your steering wheel.” Gosh, that sounds familiar, I wonder where I might have heard of that before. . . .
I believe it has to do with the fact that ATVs use lights that turn with the steering on many models. Many people are seeing this setup first hand on their ATV excursions. I believe that’s why the VWs are trying it in a car again. I don’t think they decided to make turning headlights because of other autos that had them.
Harmonious, I think he is referencing one of the many neat things about the Tucker car (hence his name) which came out over 50 years ago. Even if ATV’s have had them, the idea probably came from the man originally.

I know. I just don’t believe that is where the VW design team got the idea. I think it’s because they rode an ATV and thought it was a nifty idea.
Seems fair, since Tucker took the rear engine on an enclosed body car fom VW.
Or rode in a Lexus.
Who stole it from Tatra. (And that may actually have been where Tucker got the idea from, or it might have been one of those seperate, yet indentical evolution things. I haven’t totally been able to to pin it down yet.)

- What I am wondering is how they are going to make this US-legal, when your headlights have to be aimed to make sure they aren’t shining in oncoming traffic’s eyes…

- And anyway, Tucker and the whloe lot of them still got it wrong. Anyone who’s driven a dune buggy hard knows that headlights belong on the front edge of the roof. They work better overall there, for the driver as well as other vehicles.

Given that Lexus has been doing it for over a year, I’d say “not a problem.” Back when Tucker was building his cars, the company noted that there were a handful of states in which the center headlight (moving or not) would not be legal, but I don’t recall there being an issue with them moving.
Well, there’s the 24 inch rule which stipulates how high a headlight can be from the roadbed. Not to mention having been in front of some jerkwad in his jacked up SUV with enough off-road lights running (illegally on the road) that planes were circling overhead, thinking it was the airport, I don’t buy your statement.
