Q for Q?

Sorry to threadshit, as it may seem, but why not use something useful? Not nerdy like cuneiforms but Greek alphabet, or learn to say letters in different modern languages.

More seriously, why is the Geek community so tightly-bound? People who know Greek are not exactly relegated to movies about fat chicks getting movies or noble Westerners getting them to tame their wild ways. It’s a good thing, and it’s important culturally. Knowing which species of Klingon tribe hosed Kirk is, frankly, of no importance.

K is for Kavalier of Kavalier & Clay fame.

Because it’s fun…

There is only a limited amount of time that kids can be kids. There is, however plently of time to learn Greek. I honestly can’t think of a single time in my life that I thought, “hmm knowing the Greek alphabet would really help me out right now.” I chose this because the kids will have fun looking at it, and discovering what it all means. To be honest I will have more fun making this.

Don’t get me wrong, my kids get a well rounded education. My husband and I both work in the arts and our kids have seen orchestras, ballets, and theatre. All during kid friendly appropriate performances.

Jabba beats out jedi, huh? (And jawas)

Nothing from LoTR?

Your points are excellent, and I agree in general. IMExperience, it’s pretty hard to learn Greek as an adult, with all adult responsibilities, but I admire your resolve to let kids have fun. My parents did the same with me, and, while I struggled to catch up to people who went to prep boarding schools, the people whose parents pushed them in grade school turned out, frankly, kind of weird. Not in the good way, the good nerdy way, but hyper-driven, highly-strung little Werthers or Wertherins.
