I need help with a craft project I am working on. I am making my kids a “geek alphabet” book. It will be made of felt, kind of like this one.
I am stuck on the letter k.
Here is what I have so far:
A- Atom
B- Batman
C- Cthulhu
D- Dalek
E- Elements (fifth element)
F- Flux Capacitor
G- Godzilla
H- Hyper Drive
I- Indiana Jones
J- Jabba
K-
L- Light Saber
M- Millenium Falcon
N- Ninja
O- Optimus Prime
P- Pirate
Q- Quark (The page would be blank)
R- R2D2
S- Superman
T- Tardis
U - UFO
V- Vampire
W-Warp core
X- X-men
Y- Yoda
Z- Zombies
The words need to have a simple image that can go with it. No people, unless there is a symbol that goes with them. For example for Indiana Jones the picture is his hat and whip.
I am not really happy with what I have for Q either. The only other thing I could think of was the character Q, but I don’t have an image for that.
Personally I would cut down the Star Wars references. One or two is enough, and that goes double for any other disciplines (e.g. too much SF, science). But of course tailor it to your own kids, and if they really like Star Wars…
If not above their interest, I think computer and video game references might be good. L = Linux? Tux would be the image.
Star Wars is much more to our taste than computers, and any gaming reference would be lost. We don’t even own a working game system. The kids are pretty young right now so I am mainly working from my husbands and my preference.
The Linux penguin is cute, so it might get in on cute factor alone, but it really doesn’t mean anything to me.
So I suppose I should just call it Sci-fi ABC’s and leave it at that.
I admire your moxie. I’m compelled to threadshit, from the spirit of geekery. WTF? Why not go straight Attic Greek? If your kid’s going to be a Geek, they’re going to need to know this shit, right? In an electrical circuits class, taught by a veteran EE, chair of department no less, he wasn’t sure if that “n” with that squiggly little line on the right-hand side under it was an “eta” (lowercase). For some reason he looked at me, and I shook my head vigorously (yes, yes, master!). That’s what geeks need to know – hell, they arguably don’t even have to worry much about lower-case omega.
IIRC it was Euler who was a prodigy at ancient languages – didn’t slow him down any? (And, yes, I’ll feel like an ass if it were Gauss instead.)
