Gender, race, and other issues (split off from Doper Demographics thread)

The funny thing was, I reading through it, thinking it was a well-crafted eloquent post (which it is) and I actually got about 3 sentences past that before doing a cartoonish double-take. It was like a reading analogy of that thing where the cartoon character runs off the edge of a cliff but doesn’t fall until they look down.

Well, it was a well created, eloquent post in my head. Then i took out my phone and started writing…

Anyway, I think “Pathetic Handful of Nobodies” belongs right up there with “Teeming Millions” as a potential badge of Doper pride. I think “fish testosterone dinner” should also be Dope-memed, but I don’t exactly know what it ought to signify.

ETA: omg, a fish testosterone dinner is actually a real thing.

edit–nevermind

It is not a what3words address, unfortunately. The closest I could find is fish.test.dinner, just north of Indianapolis Airport.

Yes, I described it above. Fatty fish is high on the list of testosterone-boosting foods. So it would be a dinner designed for the purpose of boosting your testosterone, consisting of fish.

Um, er, no, that is not quite the same kind of “fish testosterone dinner” that my link is describing. Click on that link and you’ll see.

(psssst: “milt”)

For those who want to maintain the “traditional” conflating of sex and gender, and lament modern culture which allows for people to be referred by the gender they identify as…

Recall that once upon a time it was believed (among some in the sciences no less) that people of African descent were not human. That extreme form of racism is also “traditional”. I hope nobody would seriously advocate that view today. Just keep in mind that there are times in human history when we demonize people who are different from what we consider mainstream, and it takes time for acceptance and understanding to become universal.

The sad fact is that there are to this day lingering stereotypes that derive from the old beliefs that some races of people are not human. I’m sure that will be the case with trans people for some time to come. (Old outdated beliefs about “real” men and women morph into more subtle stereotypes.)

All of this exclusionary thinking is bigotry, and expressing it is properly defined as hate speech on this board and our rules as written plainly show that it’s not allowed.

That being said, we have discussions about these issues all the time and nobody gets in trouble as long as communication about these sensitive issues stays respectful. Even something like “I don’t understand what trans means” is accepted as people with experience are happy to explain.

For what it’s worth, I think this board does a pretty good job discussing a wide variety of topics. The moderating here is open and transparent, and mods are always willing to hear how they can improve discussions in the future.

I wouldn’t take at face value the disapproval of a pathetic handful of nobodies who insist because they can’t spout reactionary rhetoric this must be an echo chamber. In fact, I think it’s quite possible to hold a discussion on transgender issues here without causing any uproars or dogpiles, assuming it’s more nuanced than “Should transgender people be allowed to participate in society, or exist at all?” Likewise, the focus on decorum here makes any other “hot button” issue equally addressable, the problem is inevitably someone shows up wanting to take a boring reactionary viewpoint and the rest of the thread is about refuting them. Nobody wants a thread about poverty and crime to become “but isn’t the real problem urban blacks?” and nobody wants a thread about women’s issues to become “but why do transgender people have to exist?” I’m sorry if that seems like an echo chamber to you, but it’s not.

Ah, got it. That would be the “(fish testosterone) dinner” parsing.

And yet “milt” is not an acceptable NYT Spelling Bee option.

Yeah, don’t get me STARTED on that. (Or “bole”, or “hoopoe”.)

Or neoteny.

Those are all pretty obscure, I think (except for “milt” maybe.) I’d be a bit irked if they prevented me from getting a perfect score.

Yes let’s give her some more rope and she if she will hang herself for the Peanut Gallery’s entertainment. Already in this thread you guys have baited her sufficiently that, against her better judgement (IMO), she’s headed toward the traps you’ve gleefully and repeatedly set for her. Probably couldn’t help herself because the Cool Kidz won’t stop poking at her.

“So whadya got to say about THAT, huh?”

“OK well, how about THIS, huh?”

“Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party? Well… ANSWER ME!”

Up Next: How the Cool Kidz made Clothahump say those racist things!

I cannot possibly roll my eyes hard enough. ywtf came back to the board unprompted and started spouting transphobic vitriol. When she got modded for it, she came here, again unprompted, to complain about it and kept hinting at her transphobic vitriol, loudly feeling bad for herself for being unable to express herself fully. Someone suggested that she be allowed to break her topic ban just so we could figure out what the hell she was on about.

Saying she shouldn’t be able to break the rules that are in place for everyone in the process isn’t “gleefully and repeatedly” setting “traps” for her. If anything, it’s helping her avoid traps.

The board is more entertaining without transphobia. Get real, man.

Nm, didn’t realize this thread was dead.

Your problem is that harsh moderation is as likely to drive away ‘diverse’ posters as lax moderation. White males are hardly the only villains here; minorities of various kinds are every bit as likely to have bad attitudes towards groups not their own, and to fall foul of a ban.

Anyway, the single biggest problem with moderation is that new posters are usually greeted by being informed that they’ve broken some arcane rule or other, and their post has been moved/retitled/edited. Pretty sure that’s what puts off the few new posters, more than any of the content or attitudes.

I strongly disagree with this. Isn’t this treated fundamentally the same as the IRL issue of ‘ignorance of the law’ is not a defense? Almost every time I’ve seen a new poster fall afoul of the issue (except for trolls / trocks ) a Mod has very neutrally (or even very politely) noted the change, the reasons why, and then linked to the forum / site rules, which are admittedly not as easy to find as some might like. And even for pretty serious violations, they’re just getting a note, not a warning or ban.

YES, if someone is used to an unmoderated board / social media, they may find this offsetting, but this is very clearly and intentionally a moderated board.
